Three interlinked hypotheses

Learn from Germany. When the left panders to anti-migrant sentiment, like the BSW, it just strengthens the far right. When the left fights solid, populist, grassroots campaigns, like Die Linke, it wins.

Try not to think things can't get any worse because you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've been screaming this for years.

I’m so looking forward to all the articles on why young women are being ‘pushed into the arms of the far-left’ due to their ‘legitimate concerns’ about things like bodily autonomy, rape culture and the hollowing out of state welfare protections, right?

True. This is one area where the government should manage its finances like a household. Nobody thinks "I should eat more healthily, so I'll buy a carrot for £10." But this is what "spend more on defence" amounts to.

A NEW bargain department store has opened its first shop in Wirral.

Why does 25% AfD among young men spark a thousand "what is going on with young men?" posts yet Die Linke 34% among young women generates...nothing at all? Yes, young men voting for the radical right is an important phenomenon. But so is young women going rad left *at even higher rates*.

Britain’s net zero economy is booming, CBI says

Quite. It's our job to ask who gains from persistently pushing this outright falsehood?

Turns out that bechamel sauce with stuff in it, when thickened, fridged overnight, then dipped in egg and breadcrumbs and deepfried is quite nice. A faff to make, really bad for you. But nice.

Driver was charged with murder and the BBC still uses the exonerative voice "an SUV crushed him."

#ElonMusk is putting me in mind of the Tony Benn questions to ask of any powerful person >> “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?”

The Starmer aide/AI stuff feels a bit canary/coalmine because this isn't letting electoral factors triumph over good governance or sinply doing something I don't like - things every government does - this is falling for a scam. There are people in Nunber 10 who are just idiots.

The #BBCLauraK panel is always interesting/enraging for what it reveals about who is considered to have a valid opinion on the subjects of discussion. 1/2

What allistics call dialectics is simply the only way to attempt to view the world logically (other than being wrong). It has a name bc the process is different than applying logic to theoretical things and philosophers noticed this difference and gave it a name. Dialectics is autistic thinking.

If road deaths were a virus, we’d call it a pandemic. Safer transport helps us all – and we need it urgently | Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Jean Todt

Wrote some thoughts on class consciousness after reading John Foster's "Class Struggle and the Industrial Revolution".

Hmm disappointing. With #KeithFloyd on sabbatical, tapas was no more than 'ok'. Bean stew, patatas bravas, garlic mushrooms, salad, bread.

The idea of a 'king' is so ridiculously offensive. Any such should lose their crowns or their head.

The Communist Manifesto was published on this day in 1848. To celebrate, we've created a list of books on Marx and other key Marxists texts. Save up to 40% on these select titles - including preorders for Kevin B. Anderson's upcoming book, The Late Marx’s Revolutionary Roads.

Just looking at the latest YouGov poll - the Tories are on 9% with people under 50. It is not clear to me how this helps with that problem.

Another way of looking at this is taking £15bn out of the economy for no discernible reason.

The Left is to blame for the rise of the far-right because they refuse to work with their political rivals, unlike us, the moderates in the centre, who are successfully holding back the far-right by capitulating to their anti-immigrant rhetoric and adopting it as our own

What is nerve flossing and does it help with nerve pain?

Nihilism: nothing matters Absurdism: nothing matters, but in a cool way. Existentialism: freely choose among all the various things that don't matter!

This is my final OFM column. Here’s what I’ve learned about buffets, ‘clean eating’ and what not to serve food on | Jay Rayner

Botanist issues warning to council over Hoylake beach as thousands raised for legal action www.birkenhead.news/botanist-iss...

Warnings have been issued to Wirral Council and a government body not to take illegal action in its attempt to see a beach cleared.

Latest wages v private rent inflation data. Private rents have been rising faster than wages for past year and a half and continue to do so. In latest month with data for both (Dec 2024), private rents went up by 9%, 3 percentage points higher than wages.

“Every time I thought the chat appeared to be reaching a natural conclusion, she found a new topic to throw everything into chaos again. By the end of it I was physically sweating. Why does she need to know how my mum is? She’s never even met my mum.”

The polls are showing - Reform voters that Starmer's chasing don't want UK troops in Ukraine; government's approval rating is below Sunak's. Centrism can no longer claim to be rational, sensible, goal-oriented. It's turned into a suicide mission that will take us all with it.

Right wing "solutions" to the decline of American power and Western capitalism all have one thing in common. Their implementation only accelerates it.

The best short summary of the current conjuncture I've read 👇

Jon Davis on how the UK government is tackling the climate crisis – cartoon

Inflation up to 3% News write-ups full of air fares and private school fees (which most people don't pay) But reality is food prices rising by 3.3% and housing/household services by 5.6%. And overall inflation forecast to rise to 3.7% later this year. 2.8% will not be enough.

Successful second homes crackdown means homes are £30k cheaper for Cymry, who actually need them.

Kemi Badenoch says ‘western civilisation will be lost’ if Tory party fails. No introspection from a party that destroyed the UK economy, healthcare, public services, household income, illegally prorogued parliament, promoted social divisions, handed contracts to cronies Tories won't be missed.

Government approval has fallen to just 14%, Labour's lowest to date, and similar to the 15% who approved of the Conservative government in our last poll before the 2024 election Approve: 14% (-2 from 8-10 Feb) Disapprove: 68% (+4) Net: -54 (-6) yougov.co.uk/topics/polit...

Would be a relief at this point.
