Fed up with Meta? Avoiding Instagram or Facebook isn’t enough to stop Meta from harvesting and profiting from your private information. Here’s how to limit Meta’s ability to monetize your personal data.

Data privacy rights are like bullet trains, walkable cities, and universal healthcare, a pipe dream, a utopian fantasy, something that's standard elsewhere but portrayed as utterly impossible in the United States.

well son, you have to understand that a lot of people really wanted to say slurs without repercussions

not Lynch's movie, I know, but god, what a sendoff

Distrust every social media platform. Criticize everyone in charge. Become ungovernable

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']: Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

“To be alive: not just the carcass But the spark. That's crudely put, but… If we're not supposed to dance, Why all this music?” ― Gregory Orr, Concerning the Book that is the Body of the Beloved

These are two amazing artists. The fact one of America's foremost modern Jewish chroniclers of the Holocaust is turning to Gaza should also not be lost on anyone

While I was in prison, a man I lived with overdosed on heroin. Other prisoners tried keeping him alive with ice cubes and meth. A wild thread.

this is funny as-is but imo way funnier when you see his lawyer

You should never be in a room with police for more than an hour. If they read you your Miranda rights, you’re a suspect. Shut it down. Demand a lawyer. This is just some of the advice I got from a retired FBI Special Agent, and two renowned false confessions experts. /thread

"Arguing about whose lives are expendable is one of America’s favorite pastimes"

Always pay attention to shoes.

Getting away with crime or getting justice? Sometimes medieval criminal court records reveal instances in which localities and/or individuals took the punishment of crime into their own hands. The castration case of Tom, son of Leofwin, from the year 1202 is one such case. 🧵1/5

if you want a roadmap for how media manufactures consent for policy by inflaming prejudice against marginalized people, look no further than the origin of the drug war (early 20th c). should not be surprising that the ny times was to blame then too

“I can't pay my doctor bill. But Whitey's on the moon. Ten years from now I'll be payin' still. While Whitey's on the moon.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=goh2...

every time I post this, I get replies from people who are ENRAGED I'm COMPLYING IN ADVANCE because I think it's tactically foolish to post violent threats on the internet in a way that gets you noticed by authorities This elegantly illustrates the exact lack of strategic thinking I'm talking about

Israeli historian Lee Mordechai's updated “Bearing Witness to the Israel-Gaza War.” (December 5) One of the best organized reports on Israel’s ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and genocide in Gaza. witnessing-the-gaza-war.com

The fact that Rahm Emanuel still has a prominent voice in the Democratic Party in 2024 is indicative of Democrats' problems. I don't know how to explain to you that a person who actively covered up a police shooting and tried to tank an attempt at universal healthcare [only 2 examples] is terrible.

Dammit, Margaret Atwood. Didn’t have to push the knife so deep Cc all my fellow military historians 🗃️ (H/t to @joelhanes.bsky.social for making me aware of this poem) www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47788/...

Thread, and paper. During crunches, social service cut more than cops. During booms, cops get more than restored, social services do not. A constant bipartisan prioritization of policing over all else. Despite clear evidence—this is me, not paper—that that is bad policy for our marginal dollars.

Like Tom Holland's Lip Sync battle, we repost this every time it comes across the TL.

Formaldehyde is the poster child for our problems regulating chemicals. It's cheap & useful & companies love it. Only problem: it causes cancer. Lots of it www.propublica.org/article/form...

For five years, I have been covering what is unquestionably the biggest criminal justice scandal in American history. Today it ended when the most corrupt cop in history took his life. But it's not over. A thread.

What if I told you that the only reason I am bald is that I’m afraid of a Ratatouille situation? What if I told you that I’d have so much hair if not for the fear of a rat using me like a puppet? These are modes of control, Neo. This is how they manipulate us. Ratatouilles, Neo. Rats that pull hair.

So odd that the guy who everyone said was going to be Project 2025’s point man in a Trump administration, causing Trump to claim ignorance, will be Project 2025’s point man in the Trump administration

It's all tied together and don't let them trick you into thinking it's for safety

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents. Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.
