Nothing but admin work this week, so running 'Deep' 'Research' queries in the background that going to dissect in genAI guidance for students. A recurring issue is how much of the responses are badly regurgitated info from Wikipedia, where it's a waste of time compared to just... reading Wikipedia.

Not only do LLMs do very badly on mathematical problems, they also have no idea that they are doing badly. Insightful post by @garymarcus.bsky.social and Ernest Davis garymarcus.substack.com/p/reports-of...

Apple "Intelligence" is the greatest example of the ridiculousness of putting genAI into absolutely everything without a real reason why, relying instead on example use cases not yet possible & vague claims that AI will be - emphasis on future tense - revolutionary. edition.cnn.com/2025/03/27/t...

Something I just don't get - why people are fly-tipping tires and carpet next to the Kelvin, requiring lugging it from where-ever they managed to park their car, when it's only a 2 minute drive further to the dump.

As bad as the nights without sleep are, that the capability to fall asleep only returns close to or after when would usually awake, where, to avoid becoming nocturnal & perpetuating the hell, you have to shift from praying for sleep to fighting against it the whole day is insomnia's worst torture.

Huh, Labour under Starmer is more revolutionary than I thought. Turns out they are big on accelerationism - destroying the planet to bring an end to capitalism.

GenAI companies offering universities special 'education' subscriptions feels like a protection racket: "Have our products created havoc for your institution? Well, for a hefty regular fee, we promise this education version is trained not to launder plagiarism."

How much is the government willing to manipulate the numbers to justify cuts for disabled people? DWP claimed a 383% increase since pandemic in claimants found to have limited capacity for work & work related activity. The reality... there was only a 50% increase. www.bigissue.com/news/social-...

Whilst I am not of the "genAI is 100% evil and without any valid use case" view, I feel I could end up that way if I read yet another pro-genAI journal article where you can tell from the abstract alone that ChatGPT had a heavy role in writing - or at least rewriting - it.

Wes Streeting: mental health conditions are overdiagnosed Reality: 9.5 years on average to receive bipolar diagnosis and often NHS mental health services aren't accepting GP referrals for bipolar diagnosis unless someone is suicidal. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYDZ...

Can't help feel that it says a lot about society when this year's Bipolar Awareness Day and the start of daylight t̶o̶r̶t̶u̶r̶e̶ savings time were the same day. There is decades of research linking clock changes to new episodes of depression and mania due to the impact on circadian rhythms.

There's plenty to criticise about ChatGPT's new image model - but I have to admit it absolutely nailed creating an illustration of my average day.

No Labour government should be doing this No Labour MP should be voting for it

One way the mainstream "over" (or "under") diagnosis discourse is misleading is the assumption there is some natural, correct number of neurodivergent people. But there is no natural number, as disability is relationally, materially, and socially produced.

Taking another stab at learning how to use VCV rack.

I will always defer to Dr Guyan on data matters - here's the thread you need on the Sullivan review.

Good to finally see some mainstream progressive writers pushing back against critical psychiatry's reactionary culture war and collaborationism. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Labour continues with its Tory tribute act. Wonder how Streeting thinks overdiagnosis happens when it is difficult to even access the UK's underfunded & inadequate MH services. Reminder that it takes on average 10 years to receive a bipolar diagnosis in the UK. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

PIP isn’t ‘too easy to get’—it’s designed to fail people. 🔹 56% of #PIP claims were awarded 🔹 22% of those were later overturned, taking support away 🔹 68% of tribunal appeals beat the DWP’s decision When over two-thirds of appeals win, it’s a system built to deny support.

One more time for ministers at the back: it’s entirely possible to be a taxpayer and to receive benefits. As someone currently in the mid-tax band and on PIP, I’m more than happy for my earnings to help people who can’t work - and to pick up the state support I’m entitled to.

More dodgy DWP stats: - 10% of the headline figure is rounding 1.8m up to 2m - Stats for UC case increases mixes new claims and people moving across from ESA to UC www.gov.uk/government/n...

My experience testing 'vibe coding': - Vibe code throws error - ChatGPT suggests increasingly convoluted 'fixes' (none work) - I identify the likely issue, ChatGPT brushes it aside & continues its convolutions - I debug myself, share simple 2-10 line solution - ChatGPT:

Pretty sure Expense Claim forms and processes are a conspiracy against ADHDers.

Apparently managed to do 3,412 steps, walk 2.97 km, and burn 301 kcal doing a lecture this morning.

I wondered why I was already behind with things, then checked my Outlook folders. Since 1st January: 110 emails received from students, 137 emails sent (staff & students), and 75 emails still awaiting replies in my inbox. It's only the ninth working day of the year...

The wonders of antihistamine sleep aid pills. Samsung Health refused to even provide sleep score for 3 days last week as didn't fall asleep until after 6am.

The world's richest man has joined a growing chorus of right-wing voices attacking Wikipedia as part of an intensifying campaign against free and open access information. Why do they hate it so much?

dead internet theory takes another step closer to becoming reality

Why do people need AI summaries of news notifications? The headline is the summary. Issues with number of notifications, and how they are filtered, grouped, and prioritised, could largely be solved with better OS and app level notification controls.

So much genAI use cases, especially 'agents', seem like over-engineered and energy wasting 'solutions' to problems created by the enshittification of the internet and computing more broadly.
