"It's easier to tear down than to build" is a phrase that comes to my mind with alarming frequency lately

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

My very first conference presentation, a little over 20 years ago, took place at a meeting that was de-funded by Congress DURING THE MEETING. The research group I was part of not only didn't stop working but was subsequently funded by NIH. All this recent chaos is smoke. All hat and no cattle.

All the obvious ridiculousness set aside... "Barrier"? Really?

If you’re in the US and you’d like to know what projects and vital services federal grants currently fund in your state, you can search here: www.usaspending.gov And you can find the contact information for your elected representatives here: www.usa.gov/elected-offi... They need to hear from you.

If you’ve been affected by this pause — either as a government worker or as a health care professional — I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to reply to this post or drop me an email — [email protected].

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

Given today's events, for people in the US who might be looking for opportunities for science-leadership positions in other countries right now...thought I'd point out we are actively searching for a new Dean of @ubcmedicine.bsky.social in Vancouver, Canada: ubctoday.ubc.ca/news/january...

The rapid growth of private equity in health care has attracted widespread attention & concern Our new @jama.com study finds that when private equity takes over a hospital, patients' care experience significantly worsens. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I was glad to be invited as a discussant for a Baylor GI grand rounds talk on DGBIs and behavioral interventions for these conditions. For anyone eager for a deeper dive into the theoretical basis for these treatments, I suggest starting with the vast empirical literature on fear learning.

Writing is thinking. It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.

If you're the smartest guy in the room and also an unrepentant tormentor, then guess which quality people are going to remember most? Compare this legacy to those of scientists who gave significant critiques of their fields, yet managed to do so without abusing and exploiting others.

For all the eagerness to scale mental health services and provide novel delivery options, it's easy to overlook the question of whether anyone will use the apps!

This latest piece by @davidmcswane.bsky.social is a long and difficult read, but it is also a masterclass in marrying beautiful narrative writing and investigative, accountability journalism. Do not stop reading. Do not stop until you learn about Nadine. www.propublica.org/article/thom...
