The citizen advisory committee over at CDC has been nixed. www.npr.org/sections/sho... Any bets for how long until all of us that volunteer our time for FCC TAC are gone?

As a very long-time comic book reader... this is accurate.

People who think prompt engineering is just trying stuff at random until you get the results you hoped for: I have bad news for you about how the majority of programmers work.

i often talk about how the difference between engineering and design isn't methods but objectives an engineer's job is to figure out how to do something at all, or how to do it quantitatively "better" when they start work, the question of whether they should even be doing it is assumed settled

“If the last few weeks have shown anything, it is the danger of an unreflected and unrestrained "engineering mindset" that believes it can make any system "more efficient" without considering its history, cultural specificity and the social consequences of its own actions.”

Hey! Don't miss out on the big IEEE San Diego Section annual party. If you're a nerd and you're here in town or nearby, then please come. It's a lot of fun, great food, and an absolutely beautiful venue. Registration closes 13 January. events.vtools.ieee.org/m/453350

Vintage map of #biloxi and #gulfport MS, USA. My grandfather's TV repair business (Streiff) is listed in the business index. Could use a bit of help in narrowing down the year. Note the phone numbers. Highest resolution available here: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBXpTE

#RFBitBanger’s #SCAMP mode is now in FLDigi, which is great news. It’s now even easier to use. If you want to get involved with this new mode and also build your skills with a very special low power HF radio kit, please visit our eBay listing for kits at www.ebay.com/itm/36478…

Courtesy of our Director Steve Conklin, we are hearing about this: www.fcc.gov/document/… What do you think about this? Are there some #opensource #digital #radio opportunities here?

We are currently reading and discussing: Iterative Receiver Design by Henk Wymeersch 📚 Iterative receiver techniques include Low Density Parity Check codes, which are in our DVB-S2 FPGA work.

Video recording of our most recent technical meetup can be found here: youtu.be/J0ADQmgjg… We will be taking a winter holiday break from 20 December - 6 January, but behind the scenes we will have Remote Lab cleaning and restorations happening. We can’t wait to show you the results!

My Zadoff-Chu Sequences for Amateur Communication article is in the current issue of ARRL's QEX magazine. ORI made this work possible! My Space Frequency Block Coding article from ORI's Neptune project will be in the January/February issue of QEX magazine. What would you want to see after that?

219 MHz FCC Rules Revision Workshop Announcement: https://openresearchins.micro.blog/2024/10/24/mhz-fcc-rules.html

Here is our CEO @[email protected] presenting at #DEFCON 32 on Synthetic Aperture Radar from a #hamradio perspective. The regulatory path is a bit more clear because of our work on this issue. youtu.be/fiR4woe4O…

#FPGAs aren’t scary! youtu.be/plXJ4s4tk…

Interested in a revision of the rules for 219 MHz? Please RSVP below. Meeting will be recorded and registrants will get a copy of the video recording. events.vtools.ieee.org/m/439290

Interested in proposing updated rules for the #amateur radio 219 MHz band to the US FCC? There’s a virtual workshop on 25 October. Please RSVP below: events.vtools.ieee.org/m/439290

A 219 MHz proposed rule-making (US-centric) workshop is in planning for late October 2024. If you would like to help with this effort, please join ORI at openresearch.institute/getting-s… and indicate your interest in addressing spectrum management issues with the 219 MHz band.

Happy Documentation Day! Fridays are #documentation days at ORI. We take some time to write up what we’ve been doing, what we have planned, what we might need, and if there’s any roadblocks. A few lines are good enough to honor and celebrate the #volunteer #opensource mindset.

Today’s FPGA meetup kicks off the #Hacktoberfest season at ORI. RF Loopback is starting to work for #opulentvoice. Congratulations to the team and thank you for all your hard work. youtu.be/PKpbWVVu5…

Good news - RF Loopback for #OpulentVoice works. Build your own version on a PLUTO SDR here: github.com/OpenResea… OPV is rapidly moving through some big milestones. Imagine an #opensource HT with excellent voice quality and data - no clunky separate packet mode.

We support and participate in #hacktoberfest, an event that promotes friendly #opensource contributions. Find our repositories at github.com/OpenResea… More information about the event at hacktoberfest.com

Streaming data from DMA is working for #OpulentVoice on the #PLUTO SDR. This is an innovative #opensource #digital communications mode that has very high voice quality (no more awful AMBE/CODEC2 low bit rate harshness) and handles voice and data without you having to switch to a clunky packet mode.

🪶Red-winged Blackbird — I’ve never seen so clearly the beautiful orange fringes on their back feathers. Took this bird up a notch for me and it was already pretty high up! #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature

Bluesky sent me a note. I was apparently #461,803 on here, which is in the first 10%. I would not have guessed that, since I figured I was late to the party when I got an invitation from @nondim.com It's been a good experience so far. I write about open source digital radio & regulatory justice.

Two FCC TAC meetings this week, Opulent Voice milestones reached in Remote Labs West, and our Digital Update for Microwave event kicks off 3 October 2024. www.openresearch.institute/2024/03/0…

We partner with IEEE Computer Society Chapter of San Diego. Here’s a playlist of their presentations so far this year. Most have to do with Artificial Intelligence #AI www.youtube.com/watch

Our comments on NextNav Petition for Rulemaking are linked below. This petition is for a reorganization of the 900 MHz band. If granted, it would negatively affect the current radio services using this band, which include Amateur Radio. www.fcc.gov/ecfs/docu…

Our Zadoff-Chu article from the #Neptune project has been scheduled for November/December 2024 issue of #ARRL QST magazine.

If you missed the #ribbit radio demo at #defcon, then you can find it linked from here: www.ribbitradio.org Ribbit is a a free and #opensource web application that turns any radio into a digital messaging system. Text is converted to audio, protected by powerful forward error correction.

Find us at RF Village at #defcon this weekend. Look for the Volcano Booth with #opensource #digital #radio and #hamradio exhibits. Can’t make it? Keep up with what we do with our free and private newsletter signup here: www.openresearch.institute/newslette…

If the Catholic Church is being represented to the general public like it is at my former parish, and if all parishes treat good volunteers like that one treats theirs, then it is no secret why there's a breathtaking downdraft in engagement and energy in US religious life. JFC get a goddamn clue.

#RFBitBanger native digital mode (SCAMP) is now in FLDigi, and we have a #defcon special going on over at ebay.com/itm/36478… for this fun and accessible kit. Through-hole only soldering, supportive community, and makes a great gift for radio enthusiasts.
