I've been marinating on this post for the past day, and I think the reason it's much harder to use niche weapons in comp splatoon than it is to use niche pokemon in vgc is the fact that splatoon is a team game. Niche pokemon routinely make top level vgc placements because

I think this is especially evident in cooler use, but in general, lower level players worry too much about copying the aesthetic of higher level players, when they should be focused on game fundamentals.
