This festival is a hoot! #portugal #aveiro 😁 youtu.be/p1J65NAQEcs?...

Hell yes!

Ya think? Geez... apnews.com/article/trum...

I'm pretty sure that I can no longer be shocked by anything Trump or MAGA does. What's got me rattled is all the pre-obeying and knuckling under by people and institutions that could put up a fight, for example a fight for DEI. It's not all Americans, but the world can clearly see who we are now.

Continuing my weblog series about visual style -- a short entry this time about standard visual narrative coverage and what we might do to spice it up. framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/02/12/f...

Pardon me while I engage in a moment of shameless self-promotion. Thank you!

Seriously Onion. Stay in your lane, and stop covering real news. Sheesh!!!

This again, but from Substack. open.substack.com/pub/docfilm/...

Here's a round-up of the current state of my documentary projects for 2025. #documentary #nonfiction #storytelling docfilm.substack.com/p/the-curren...

I'm one of the experts you call. I have a Ph.D. in rhetoric. That doesn't mean I know it all or that I'm always right. But I do know a lot about it, and my assertions are not simply pulled out of my ass. So, yes, this is a Nazi salute, and he does mean it that way. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VfY...

Plus the missed lede, IMO: Specifically saying we are taking back the Panama Canal (!!!???). You shouldn't have to be a boomer to remember (or to have studied) our troubling treatment of Latin America through the years. This was the stuff of banner headlines left largely undiscussed.

I know many people who won't be watching the inauguration. I get it. But I'm watching. I've got an ocean giving me a bit of emotional protection. I want to be a fully conscious witness to history -- painful as it is.

I installed Instagram about a month after it was released in October 2010. I published my first photo on the app on 22 November. I am 18 images away from 1,000. #photography #instagram #socialmedia framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/20/a...

It's bad. But it's going to get worse because it happened before. Watch "Witness at Tornillo" -- about the fight over separating children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. #immigration #trump #borderpatrol framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/16/d...

A little history, and, perhaps, a little foreshadowing (let's hope not). This documentary I helped produce is just as relevant today as the last time Trump was president. Please watch and pass it along. #border #immigration #trump #refugees www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfJv...

Hmmmmm... This seems like a huge stretch, especially considering the thorough and sobering response by AP.

What's in store for refugees at the border between Mexico and the United States? Check out what happened the last time Trump was in charge -- Witness at Tornillo, a documentary film by Carbon Trace Productions. #refugees #documentary framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/16/d...

I'm working on a project that will combine photo & video in four acts based on the seasons. I'm toying with looks for the photos. Here's the style I originally created for my COVID pictures: desaturated but with extra "pop" to bring out a few, muted colors. #portugal #aveiro #streetphotography

“I apologize for being so naive.” Chilling words. We still do not understand (i.e. an academic sort of way) what social media really means -- its impacts on producers and consumers who otherwise, in a pre-internet world, would not have thought to do such things. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

I sent my last Substack newsletter in June 2021. I just sent an update :-) There's been some activity recently that I'm stacking up to Bluesky. Hmmmm... In any case, I may do some cross posting from Frame by Frame -- my old-fashioned weblog :-) substack.com/@docfilm

I actually do not mean to be glib or snarky, but seeing as how they've lived up to nothing so far, why will this be any different?

Been getting pretty sick of the MSM product lately. Let's hope this lives up to the promises.

The size of your camera, and the presence of a dead cat, says something to people in the streets. #videography #photography #streetphotography #streetvideography #canoncameras #weblog framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/14/t...

Another blast from the past... Here's the .rss feed for my Frame by Frame weblog for all the rest of you stuck in the early 2000s :-) framebyframe.rhetorica.net/feed/

For the third, and I hope last, time I have walked away from TikTok. Two reasons: It's designed to monetize outrage. I don't want to feed that. And, more importantly, it's too freaking difficult to do well. I'm saving my efforts, instead, for my documentary films and photography. #tiktok

Ha! I like to write headlines that over-sell :-) Is that the same as clickbait? Anyway, be one of the three people who read my Frame by Frame weblog -- about visual nonfiction storytelling :-) #documentary #documentaryfilmmaking #blogging framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/12/h...

LOL... Needed that 🤣🤣🤣

I'm in Lisboa to film an important protest (and right-wing counter-protest). Depending, I may post updates. Otherwise, watch for a wrap-up. #portugal #lisbon #racism #immigration www.publico.pt/2025/01/10/s...

Seriously, the only reason I'm linking my recent post from Frame by Frame is so you might actually check it out -- it being the whole weblog. I know, I know. Blogs are sooooo 2004. Let's consider brining back the weblog AND promoting Bluesky. #blogging framebyframe.rhetorica.net/2025/01/10/z...

Something to do while we wait: Consider some predictions. #documentary #documentaryshort #liveactionshort variety.com/lists/2025-o...

Important budgeting and scheduling materials for 2025 from the International Documentary Association.

These things can be interesting, but I think it requires an independent filmmaker looking to tell a compelling story and not a streaming service looking for just anything to fill its list.

Hmmmm... seems to me a big part of the problem is that people want to watch. How does that happen? The "entertainment" itself is just part of a larger... what? Maybe we've always been this way. Even Shakespeare is full of dick and fart jokes. #documentary #culture www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/a...

Here's a photography list for Bluesky. You know it's good because I'm on it 😉 bsky.app/profile/flak... #photography

I seriously find myself nostalgic for the early days of blogging, circa 1998 to 2008. I published two successful ones back then: Rhetorica (press/politics) and Carbon Trace (bicycling). My new weblog is Frame by Frame at framebyframe.rhetorica.net

Some of my friends are quitting Facebook cuz reasons. I'm cool with that. But I'm not ready for that yet. I do my best to control my feed. And I only use it to post personal stuff (i.e. what's happening in my life) for family and friends. Here on Bluesky you get my "professional" self.
