Born in Rocky Mount, NC, Susie Sharp was a trailblazer. As the state's first female Superior Court judge in 1949 &, in 1974, the first female Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court, she set new precedents for women's roles in law and justice. #WomensHistoryMonth #SusieSharp #NCWomen

Today marks a pivotal moment in civil rights history. On March 21, 1949, the Freedom Riders surrendered at the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough, sent to segregated chain gangs despite the Supreme Court's 1946 ruling against interstate segregation. Their bravery paved the way for justice.

On this day in 1966, historian & Communist Party member Herbert Aptheker defied NC’s Speaker Ban, addressing 2,000 students just off-campus at UNC-Chapel Hill. In ‘68, the law was ruled unconstitutional—a major win for freedom of speech and one of the first wins for the ACLU of NC!
