This cannot be stressed enough. People do not in fact know what to do about most of what's happening. There are lots of things happening at once and a lot of it is complex. So if you actually have CONCRETE and SPECIFIC actions to suggest, do that. Some people will appreciate it & jump on board.

The point of the firehose of Executive Orders is to disorient and to demobilize. It's to instill maximum fear. If we know this, then that's already half the battle. This means that we have to respond with focus on those most vulnerable & targets. It means we have to refuse their attempt to scare us.

A THREAD on how disaster donations can be extremely harmful instead of helpful to communities experiencing a disaster. I'll be using the movie Clueless to illustrate this issue but there is also decades of disaster research about this and plenty of first-hand accounts. #GreySky

I cannot stress enough how this is one of the central pillars of my political philosophy. In my letter that I shared with young organizers last year, I stress the importance of refusing cynicism: prisonculture.substack.com/p/letter-to-...

Another piece and great commentary by my friend @sby10.bsky.social.

The Sameer Project does mutual aid run by Palestinians for Palestinians: linktr.ee/thesameerpro... Operation Olive Branch vets individuals fundraisers: linktr.ee/opolivebranch

This year is no different. No family gathering. No Christmas meal. No gifts from my loved ones. No visits.

Important new paper to add to the literature that direct action works. Maybe some big shot climate scientists that have blocked people for pointing this out will take another look.

Combine the rapidity of deploying solar and the news I’ve been seeing on storage capacity and nuclear (fission) is becoming even less compelling.

A wonderful interview between two very thoughtful and intelligent people dissecting the way forward. The answer is unclear, except for the need to organize and build relationships with each other.

Letter from a UK jail~

🚨🧵Published today: We use (accessible) math & data science to explore diversity and shared identity in groups—and the tensions between them. Org theory: diversity strengthens teams. Social psych: shared identity benefits groups. Can we resolve this? Math offers insights! #AcademicSky #socialpsyc

Biden's LNG studies coming tomorrow. Key findings appear to be that LNG: -- displaces more renewables than coal -- increases emissions in all scenarios -- increases wholesale energy costs by 30% -- increases pollution burdens for communities www.nytimes.com/2024/12/16/c...

🧪 ⚛️ 🧮 Not my paper, but from my wonderful colleague at Holy Cross, Prof. Alo Basu. This is her first-person account of finding herself back in the intro science classroom as a student, in an effort to generate new ideas for retaining STEM students www.frontiersin.org/journals/edu...

In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising. I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping. If you're reading this, turn that off RIGHT NOW before you forget.

In a new interdisciplinary Nature Climate Change Perspective paper, led by me, @lisgilmore and Rachael Shwom, we offer a critical perspective on #climate and social “tipping points.” 🎁: rdcu.be/d2gBC 🧵

We did it! I donated my $10,000 match. There's still time to give and I hope those who haven't will consider chipping in because we're still a long way to the final goal. Thank you so much to everyone who donated & shared so far.

Adham who runs NSAAEM a mutual aid project in North Gaza heard about #GivingTuesday and was very excited about the ability to raise money for a warm winter for the kids of North Gaza. He sent the following message below 🧵 chuffed.org/project/nort...

$1449 Away now!!! Y'all are KILLING IT! Thank you.

Very close to getting matching funds for a very important cause

If you're aged 30 or more, then 50% of all human fossil fuel emissions happened during your lifetime

Done!

NEW: Formaldehyde poses a threat to public health that’s unlikely to be managed any time soon. In a new analysis, ProPublica found that no matter where you live, you’re exposed to levels of the chemical that put you at elevated risk of developing cancer. propub.li/4gjHPA5

A very interesting podcast episode (with transcripts!) that looks into the recent ruling on Shell’s #climate responsibilities. The ruling appears to not be as big of a win for Shell as it has been made out to be

This will certainly go into a few of my courses.

Sweet potatoes are a #Thanksgiving staple. Farm workers near Merced CA start their day at 4am. While this machine digs up the sweet potatoes, it also digs up dirt and debris. Workers will spend 8 hours on their feet sorting the vegetables. It’s hard dirty work. #WeFeedYou

When you buy #Thanksgiving wine make it a union wine. Noemi's a #UFW member & works for CK Mondavi who contributes towards her families medical, dental & vision plan. Find more products produced by workers under UFW contract @ ufw.org/ul #WeFeedYou

This is how those fresh and fragrant bundled herbs like parsley get to your grocery store. Workers spend 8 hours a day on their knees harvesting this crop that is used in our #Thanksgiving stuffing. #WeFeedYou

Beautiful. Got to love a good direct action

“[Elites] created “wokeness” in their own image and…a fictional reality in which this patrician class fought valiantly for it & it failed because it’s…not what the people want. [But] what the people want was never…advocated for w/any leadership, consistency and conviction. The fight never started.”
