Half the Answer #7: Caitlin and Trent discuss with guest Alan Elrod the nature of nationalism, the kinds of nationalism at play today, and how U.S. progressives can participate in a national identity that celebrates pluralism and multiculturalism. www.liberalcurrents.com/halftheanswe...

The principle at stake here is so fundamental it predates even Magna Carta in English law, and before that stretching all the way back to Rome, and has its similarly ancient equivalents in every legal system in the world, because it's the inherent bedrock foundation of what courts and laws are for.

what if instead of the @nytimes.com doing puff pieces on fascists they did puff pieces on liberals (complete with glam shots of @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com)

Fine, you got me.

Important to understand: Fascism is worse than authoritarianism because "the core fascist mission is a cultural rebirth in which the nation's (racially) pure or ‘true’ people is saved from destruction and its enemies are purged from within." www.liberalcurrents.com/yes-its-fasc...

Here's an updated look at all Trump's 2nd-term tariffs, accounting for today's exemption for phones & computers The overall US tariff rate is now 25%, down from 29% pre-exemption but still 10x what it was before Trump took office (1/3)

the other insane thing about these new tariff exemptions is that they exempted the machinery used to make semiconductors because that’s obviously counterproductive to re-shoring semiconductor manufacturing but have not extended that logic to ***all the other types of machinery***

I recommend this piece by @kjephd.bsky.social. A few weeks ago, I thought, "We are no longer in pre-fascism; we're w/in fascism itself." Since then, I brushed off Paxton, but needed a piece like this to place various principles in context of current events www.liberalcurrents.com/yes-its-fasc...

"liberals won't talk about birthrates," bruenig says. "that's why you'll never see an actually good essay on the subject at a website called liberal currents" www.liberalcurrents.com/the-crisis-o...

The thing is, you can't actually form a "pro-natalist" coalition with the Far Right because they fundamentally don't want to solve the actual problem.

This narrative that men are persecuted and beleaguered by a “liberal” society purely victim mentality. If a more equal society leaves you behind it’s a “you” problem, not a grand conspiracy. www.liberalcurrents.com/most-men-don...

Patel lied, and the Senate believed him www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/u...

Vaccines are one of the greatest inventions in human history. And with mRNA vaccines, we’re on the cusp of a whole new era of protection from some of the worst diseases we know. Feels like that’s worth investing in, both in terms of the science and the public trust.

Oh how shocked I am to find out Howard Lutnick lied to me and we won't actually be making iPhones in America! Think of that! Howard Lutnick! Just going on TV and lying. What ARE the chances?

I signed the 10% Giving Pledge this year, and this week, I decided to donate 19% of my annual income to global health charities. It's not going to be anywhere near "enough", but I'm happy to do it --

Update: I just listened to the audio of this. Trump: “If the Supreme Court said bring somebody back, I would do that. I respect the Supreme Court.” Reporter: And the lower court as well…? Trump: “Oh no, no. I’m not talking about the lower court. I have great respect for the Supreme Court.”

This is so obviously correct that I'm embarrassed for the firms that caved.

Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

yeah man, please make my 85 year old great aunt prove her citizenship to vote in rural georgia, this definitely isn’t reminiscent of anything in the american past

What I like most about this conversation is all the military metaphors in the back half. Fear is paralyzing.

🚨NEW: The NC Supreme Court's GOP majority will retroactively nullify 2,000 to 7,000 ballots from military and overseas voters unless they quickly prove their identity—but only those who voted in a few Democratic counties. Could overturn Justice Riggs' victory. appellate.nccourts.org/orders.php?t...

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie). Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development
