The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

He surely knows the Constitution better than the people who had him arrested.

Criminals deserve due process because due process is literally how we determine whether someone is, *in fact*, a criminal

Just want to add that the issue of whether something is legal is a technical question that should be subordinate to basic questions of right and wrong, and exiling US citizens - even criminals! - to foreign prisons is deeply, deeply wrong.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind. An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one." The other said, "Take him anyway." So they did.

You really don't need to be an oracle to read this sign.

I just attended a conference in the US. We had one speaker detained and two others turned away at the border.

one question i have: who is milking the oats?

They don't really want anybody to study Whitman or Twain, because when you actually do, you are inevitably drawn to the hardest questions about America. Do they think Huck Finn is a story about the joys of traveling on a raft?

A good article on the cruel and foolish destruction of the NEH, which funds valuable state and local historical and cultural projects. slate.com/news-and-pol...

So the US can demand Greenland but not the return of a wrongfully deported person?

This is a concession by the U.S. government that its “arrangement” with El Salvador is irrevocable. To me this has to be grounds to argue that the arrangement itself is unconstitutional under the Fifth and Eighth Amendments

Called my congressman who voted for the SAVE act. Me: What documents will I need to vote if this passes? Staffer: a DL and birth certificate. Me: The documents don’t match Staffer: Then a marriage certificate. Me: Will my husband need the marriage certificate too? Staffer: No Me: See the problem?

Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

This is palpably true. The chilling effect on free speech and academic freedom has been swift and fierce, as intended.

Trump destroyed National History Day and is replacing it with a dumb Garden of Heroes.

Illegal ideas.

Something quaint and outdated is that the president takes an oath to "faithfully execute" his office and "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution."

Idaho police officers opened fire from behind a chain-link fence just seconds after exiting their patrol cars and critically wounded a teenage boy — described by his family as nonverbal, autistic and intellectually disabled — as he stepped toward them with a knife, video from a witness shows.
