Lots of GOP House members have large numbers of federal employees in their districts. Yes, DC metro is hardest hit by DOGE, but the pain from cuts will be felt across the country. crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/...

"Efficiency" has a specific meaning, which is the ratio of inputs to outputs. You can't calculate efficiency without measuring outputs. I can save money by not putting gas in my car, but I'm not going anywhere. DOGE is not just cutting inputs, it's cutting outputs, which is a Congressional issue.

Trump & Musk have given Democrats a mission they can’t duck: Defending constitutional democracy & the rule of law and fighting oligarchy Would appreciate your sharing Read my latest essay without hitting the paywall for 14 days using this link. I'm running a film series on Demagogues and Democracy as part of my intro course this semester. First up: Gabriel Over the White House (1933). A few observations (spoilers)

For Americanists puzzling over the disappearance of Congress, now is a good time to read Ivan Ermakoff's brilliant "Ruling Oneself Out: A Theory of Collective Abdications". Ermakoff explores passage of the Enabling Act in 1933 and transfer of full powers to Pétain in 1940.

Missing from the literature in political science on the growth of presidential power is an accounting of the technological developments in public administration--digital platforms, automation, data analytics--that allow a twenty-something to upend the Constitution with a few lines of code.

For every program the administration attempts to dismantle, there is a network of organizations, states, and local governments who form a potential defense constituency. Attempting to destroy the submerged state only reveals its benefits and expands the conflict. And yet…(1/2)

Very much enjoyed being part of this great conversation about Ag policy and the future of the farm bill.

Political time is a useful lens for analyzing presidents and American political development. However, the mainspring of our constitutional time piece is out of synch, the gears are misaligned. I've written a short piece on why it's getting harder to tell what time it is. 🧵.

The federal crop insurance program might offer a glimpse at the future of the insurance industry. The government subsidizes farmer premiums, covers a big portion of the administrative costs, and reinsures the most risky policies. The industry reaps the profits and taxpayers foot the bill.

I've updated the Election Spending Dashboard. In the 9 weeks after Labor Day, Harris + allied groups outspent Trump by almost a 2-1 margin overall and almost 3-1 on media. Total presidential spending was about $600 million more than it was in 2020. election-spending-data.shinyapps.io/dashboard/

Muppets from Space is a great movie. So are the two Hellboy movies. I only just realized Jeffrey Tambor essentially plays the same character in both.

While Jimmy Carter-a white ex-Governor-seems like a more conventional candidate than Obama or Trump. Unlike Obama & Trump, he was unknown nationally before his campaign. He was the first President with no DC experience since Wilson. His nomination was an upset made possible by post-1968 reforms. 1)

See Skowronek’s Politics Presidents Make on the many Hoover/Carter parallels. Both were engineers who approached the presidency like a math problem, as a matter of implementing the correct solution. And both tried (and failed) to hold together a crumbling coalition.

My wife uncovered this list of our “favorite things” from a semester in Dublin in 2010 when I was teaching at UCD and we enrolled our kids (5 and 10 at the time) in Irish national schools. I really miss the 3 P’s (a pub, a pint, and a paper).

What is this idiocy?

Re-upping this ACA thread after Trump’s morning show performance.

Listened to Remain in Light today for the first time in years (possibly decades). Hearing that record as a teenager and the Afrobeat influences running through the album planted the seed for a future appreciation of world music.

co-sign. if we get unlucky and find ourselves suffering through a bird flu pandemic because our governments chose the short-term profits of animal agriculture over long-term public health, it will have been entirely predictable. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/29/o...

My friends have this nice holiday tradition: a beer advent calendar. Everyone buys a case of beer and we each get back a selection of special brews to carry us through the season.

A SCOTUS thread. I like analyzing through historical analogies. I've previously argued that the Roberts Court's policies resemble the Fuller Court. In terms of empowerment and agenda-setting, I'm working on comparing to the Warren Court (among others). Now it's Chief Justice Hughes' time to shine.

Was finally able to publish the final update to the dashboard tracking the Harris (+ Biden) digital targeting efforts: aarenge.shinyapps.io/biden_google... With the discussion about the Harris campaign's strategy (ie the Pod Save America intv), highly recommend digging into the data yourself

Trump’s 2024 cabinet picks are extremely conservative. Despite media claims floating around about ideological diversity, the extreme right has a much firmer grip on his administration than in 2016.(1/n)

Great set of historical works on tariff and trade.

Weak autocracies are far more common than strong autocracies. They are also often far more dangerous and damaging than strong autocracies. Never take hope from an autocrat’s weakness. Instead, prepare for the worst. A 🧵 based on 2 of my books: (1/N)

Ag Secretary is not a high profile cabinet post but the USDA has authority over a broad range of policies, from nutrition programs to food safety. The Trump admin tried to impose strict work requirements for SNAP recipients until COVID derailed them in 2020. It will be back on the agenda on day one.

Brooke Rollins, president of the America First Policy Institute, an organization closely allied with President-elect Donald Trump, has been selected to serve as agriculture secretary.
