My museum adventure this week: National Portrait Gallery. I spent the day in the atrium w/ my laptop to do some studying and watch course lectures, taking breaks into many of the exhibits, incl. the Presidential Portraits plus small exhibits involving Frederick Douglass & James Baldwin. ++

Shuttling into DC b/c @wmata.com track work & guy w/ accent & toddler behind me is teaching her English words - ice, airplane, car, etc. Then "Where are we? Yes, America". As we pass into DC via Roosevelt bridge the homeless tents come into view & he says to himself "ooo, yeah that is America".

Re the 'All men want to be heroes' article: No, they don't. Plenty of opportunities for this kind of stuff in the US. The demand side is a bit weak. That said, we might have a healthier society if 'guy who works a shit job but doesn't shirk his responsibilities' had relatively higher status.
