Today I learned that DOGE fired the person who does programming for the bouys that keep freighters safe on the Great Lakes. Hard to tell a positive story about planes crashing, ships sinking, measles deaths, etc. wisconsinexaminer.com/2025/02/21/m...

Cuts to federally funded science in Bay Area have big impacts. Helpful to share and amplify this survey @scottwiener.bsky.social @liccardo.house.gov

Survey tracks impacts to cuts in federally funded sciences. Seems like a potentially *very* helpful thing to get in front of news, communities and legislators in every district - harms to health, safety, economy: fedscienceimpacts.org

The House Republican CR, and I am not making this up, would take money away from child abuse prevention and clean drinking water grants.

I cannot recommend enough that you dedicate some time to supporting Muni funding. You don’t realize how difficult life gets without good transit until you’ve lost it. Don’t let San Francisco lose it!

Mandatory high school civics class that isn’t just like “how a bill becomes law” or whatever but also “how NOAA powers your phone’s weather app” and “NIH helped make your asthma inhaler”

It’s inspiring to see people come together to oppose Trump & Musk’s war on science. They’re trying to tear down scientific research as part of their authoritarian attack on critical thinking & knowledge. We’re having none of it. We must support & defend science.

WMATA keeps rocking up the wins, fastest year-on-year ridership growth for any major US metro system in recently-released January data. Keep in mind this is more than just aggressive federal return-to-office (which only took effect in late January)

Academic freedom and independence still live. Thank you, Georgetown University, for teaching our Justice Department about the 1st Amendment!

1. The Trump administration has crippled cancer and Alzheimer's research by imposing a freeze on all government credit cards at NIH. An NIH source with direct knowledge tell Popular Information that scientific research has ground to halt because necessary supplies can no longer be purchased.

The Bay Area weather radar (KMUX) has been out of service for more than 24 hours now. An expensive broken part needs to be replaced and specially ordered, but that may not be possible due to ongoing freeze on government credit card spending, I’ve been told.

Elon hates transit — which makes me want to take it & fight for it even more. Join me.

Voters are freaked when they hear about Trump and Musk shutting down cancer research in the US. Even 71% of indy voters.

Good luck, Florida!

Today, I introduced the MEME Act, which prohibits top federal officials from issuing, sponsoring, or promoting a security, commodity, or digital asset with criminal and civil penalties.

With talks of gutting the EPA workforce by 75%, this is what the Cuyahoga River looked like before the EPA and Clean Water Act, btw.

This is such a great article explaining why the destruction of research funding will harm the US in the long run. www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

In many ways it's fitting that the showdown between monarchy and democracy ends up being over NYC congestion pricing. Cities are where the power of kings were first challenged, and few things are more fundamental to government than control of public space. The cameras are staying on!

I introduced legislation to strengthen CA’s protections for trans people who are targeted by other states, the feds or bad actors for prosecution or abuse of health info. The bill also protects trans folks’ families, teachers & health providers, all of whom are being threatened by Trump & company.🧵

It's crazy to me that the CFPB, an agency that's basically in charge of preventing banks from robbing you, is perceived as the most liberal arm of the government.

This is an official White House post. Some will dismiss it as trolling to be ignored. But it’s in the context of Trump acting like a King: claiming he can’t violate the law, brazenly violating the law, threatening opponents with prison, banning press, etc. It’s very real. It’s how democracies die.

Federal funding cuts have forced wildland firefighters to cancel prescribed burns, which help prevent wildfires. “We will be more vulnerable to a catastrophic fire in the future as a result,” one firefighter said.

Once again, it was never about sports or protecting women. It was always about stripping away the rights, safety, respect, and recognition of trans people.

On this Presidents Day, a reminder: It’s not Kings Day. It’s not Authoritarians Day. It’s not Dear Leaders Day. It’s not Kleptocrats Day. It’s not “I can’t violate the law because I won the election” Day. It’s Presidents Day. Any questions?

The uncertainty caused by Trump’s funding and hiring freezes has limited training, postponed work to reduce flammable vegetation in areas vulnerable to wildfire and left some firefighters with little choice but to leave the force.

A call into the ether - anybody doing a mass campaign against cuts to medical research? Easy to understand that slashing efforts to cure cancer etc is bad; many people and family members helped by medical science, many blue, red, purple districts economically benefit from health research.

Meanwhile MAGA influencers & pols do a consistently good job reading the online crowd, pulling interesting things up, and making them the issue or Main Character of at least the day… connecting whatever’s happening to some base-winning theme that they return to. Familiarity, novelty, repetition.

Last night, we broke the news that the top US election security watchdog has frozen all of its election security work and is reviewing everything it has done to help state and local officials secure their elections for the past eight years. https://wrd.cm/3QkfGh3

This is very good and important

Glad to see my Senator speaking up in favor of consumer protection and against scammers

The CFPB has returned $21 billion to 205 million consumers who were scammed at the hands of predatory banks. You can root out waste, fraud, and abuse... or you can eliminate the CFPB. But you can't do both.

if you think about it, the San Francisco Bay is just a long extension of the Lake Merritt outlet channel

This is like a bank robber getting to fire the cops and disable the alarms just before he strolls into the bank lobby.

America cannot win this century without the investment in basic science research that enabled us to win the 20th century – this Administration’s divestment cedes ground to China. We demand the restoration of critical dollars for NIH, NSF, DOE, and their grantees against this unlawful order.

Less than 48 hours away - see you Thursday! ⬇️

Donald shoup literally started a movement that gave people the language, evidence, and motivation to push back against a half century of bad parking policy destroying our cities. RIP king. I’ll never stop fighting to eliminate parking mandates 🫡

The FCC is investigating a San Francisco radio station for its coverage of Trump/ICE's actions. Says the director of the First Amendment Coalition: "It’s an intimidating exercise." www.kqed.org/news/1202597...

A federal court just blocked Elon Musk from interfering with the federal government’s payments system. There is power in fighting back. We won’t let up until this block is permanent.

BREAKING: Representatives of Elon Musk’s “DOGE” have gotten into the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where they have accessed key payment and contracting systems.
