To add a data point about the masonry: by midnight last night the air temperature was down to 20-22° according to the met office. Our thermostat still registered 26° inside the house, with windows open and fan blowing. The bricks must've cooked a fair bit!

Could the local magpies please go back to sleep and stop fucking around this early.

READ THIS BOOK! It's funny and touching and slightly scary and lovely.

A quick reminder that no dog died from missing a walk, but many dogs have died as a result of being exercised in hot weather! I've treated many dogs with heat stroke and it is often fatal, which is heartbreaking for the owners.

I have so many opinions about people being snarky about the heat first because I dislike assholery and second because I am spending the day caring for my MiL, who has advanced MS with heat reactive symptoms, and a toddler who just threw up all over the car seat and is riddled with heat rash

This echoes my biggest complaint about LLMs: they don't know when to say "I don't know" or "that's a bullshit question".

My talk on Vector, Lore Harp and how ridiculously overlooked Silicon Valley's women founders are, is now online. Given at the Computer Conversation Society last month. youtu.be/DMVcdbpJFbQ?...

Who would win Your heart Vs Matryoshka Telly

A dapper little dude at my bird feeder the other day. It definitely paid to wash my living room window :) 🪶🌿

The notion that generative AI has become something we "basically can’t function without it" is bizarre to me. If the popular AI models vanished overnight, the only immediate impact on my life would be that the fake accounts I write about would no longer be using generative AI.

"Stokes has won 23 of his 33 games in charge while losing 12" Nice to see that the Grauniad has branched from its own spelling system to its own mathematics. #cricket #EngVInd

MY FIRST EVER ARTICLE FOR SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN IS OUT!!! It's all about how black holes shred stars and how we discovered that black holes "burp" after eating them, and even includes a black hole called Jetty McJetface! What's not to love? 🤩 www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-... 🔭🧪🎢

I have the account of the US VP blocked, and I am begging: don't screenshot his posts and then post the screenshots to dunk on them. Seeing his posts is just going to make a lot of people angry and/or upset. We have him blocked because we don't want to read anything he has to say.

Spouse: we are having asparagus Me in my head: no, we are having asparagī or asparagoi. I love that ἀσφάρᾰγος just means plant shoots and that’s why it’s called asparagus. lol etymology! Spouse: … ? Me in my head: Don’t say it. No one cares about your obsession with plurals. Me aloud: “cool!”

9 out of 10 doctors agree that Telly is the cure for everything

If you are having a trash day maybe stare at this gloriously happy boi

Time to trot out this classic from 2003 again.

my hottest educational take is that schools should actively, non-punitively teach students how to admit when they don't know something, aren't sure or have made a mistake, with various teaching frameworks adapted to support this ideal, because people who can't admit fault are breaking the world

Isn't that just... A missile?

This is horrific and, like the anti-abortion amendment tabled by the Tories and the anti-trans legislation and court cases, it's all coming from the same place, and that's far right, Christian extremist campaigners seeking to destroy bodily autonomy.

i keep cracking up at this post on AI writing

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? A vast majority of the software running in the world is on low-power (consumption) systems like your microwave, remote control, thermostat, etc. What you see as apps or on computers is just the tip of the iceberg.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? nothing. i write software. we all know how bad it is

THINGS YOU LOVE TO SEE: IT there's more to do and further to go, but this (and the resounding vote against an amendment that banned 'postal abortions') is a great step
