Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

My other half @sorchao.bsky.social is giving a lecture on 6 March. Check it out!

Heading to DCU to speak at the 'Education after the algorithm: Co-designing critical and creative futures' conference on our work with students co-creating Maynooth University's Student GenAI guidelines

We’re in a bubble. When it pops it is going to be really ugly. Ilya Sutskever’s new company has no product and is raising $1 billion at a $30bn valuation. Mira Murati’s new company just announced a complete nothing burger. The longer this goes on the worse it will be. techcrunch.com/2025/02/18/s...

This Friday we (including @misterjabsticks.bsky.social) will be discussing our work co-creating @maynoothuniversity.ie GenAI Student Guidelines at the Education after the Algorithm conference, DCU. Really looking forward to discussing the role of students in developing such policies.

A BBC study just found that generative AI can't even generate news story synopses with any consistent accuracy, and here we are happily pretending it's a symmetrical replacement for education and experience

Newsletter: Generative AI is a marketing con perpetuated by Sam Altman and Dario Amodei through a mixture of lies and half-truths carried by a tech media that fails to ask the right questions. Outside of ChatGPT, generative AI companies barely get any traffic at all. www.wheresyoured.at/longcon/

The Gulf of America must have been JD’s idea. It’s a transubstantiation of water into whine.

Enjoyed talking at the inaugural Maynooth University GenAI Community of Practice today about the challenges and opportunities of GenAI in assessment practice.

Prepping for a session on GenAI and had a look at Google Treads for the terms 'ChatGPT' and 'Moodle'. The strong relationship between these terms and the academic calendar highlights that students are significant users.

The two countries held back from signing the communique agreed by about 60 countries at the AI Action summit in Paris as US vice-president JD Vance vowed that the US would remain the dominant force in the technology. www.ft.com/content/a6b5...

@edinburghup.bsky.social have recently published my blog post on science and religion in 19th-century Scotland, so I thought I'd share it with you all. euppublishingblog.com/2024/12/09/r...

cfp. annual @hstmnetworkireland.bsky.social conference. Always a welcome and insightful event.

On Rethink, we discussed AI companies’ copyright heist. Here, a leading children’s author and illustrator argues that the government must not give in to Big Tech www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

In Paris listening to the fifth talk in a row on global AI risks to humanity, and not one mention yet of runaway AI energy demand pushing us over the climate brink

DeepSeek hot take: The emperor still has no clothes, but it's very distressing to the emperor that their non-clothes can be made so much more cheaply.

'Potential breach of intellectual property'

So, to recap: the suggestion is: the UK creative industries grant open access to all their historic and future work and IP, without payment, to the brains behind a nascent industry that just tanked $1tn in a couple of hours. Sure. Seems great.

Looks like an interesting position @hstmnetworkireland.bsky.social @iaphistorians.bsky.social @irishhistorians.bsky.social

Five things most people don't seem to understand about DeepSeek. • It's not smarter than earlier models, just trained more cheaply • It doesn't solve hallucinations or problems with reliability. Rest of post at open.substack.com/pub/garymarc...

A few weeks ago @emollick.bsky.social hyped this alleged study showing positive impact of AI in Nigerian education. Mercifully @ddmeyer.bsky.social has dug into what's really happening so I don't have to, and unsurprisingly, it's a crock. We need to do better. open.substack.com/pub/danmeyer...
