We're hiring a Research Fellow at Edinburgh Napier University to join the SharkScape project, a three–year, multi-institute project involving field-based research and data analysis. Apply now: 🔗 jobs.ac.uk/job/DLV215/r... #MarineScience #SharkConservation #ResearchJobs

Are you a small boat operator or fisherman who wants to save ~15% on fuel costs without spending a fortune? myboatsdata.com

A three-faced four-eyed gargoyle perched on a 12th century church buttress, it was something the local clergy hadn't noticed from the ground! #dronephotography

At minus six celsius it was a tad nippy for mapping some woodland, so I sent the little one up for some overheads and grabbed an opportune silhouette on the way. 🥶 #dronephotography #brassknobs

Early morning tracks. #dronephotography Finally out to record some habitat restoration projects as the fog has lifted, but couldn't resist pressing the shutter button on my way up. 🌞

Conger eels are something of a rarity off East Yorkshire, with only a handful of official recordings between the Wash and Middlesbrough (about 200km of coastline). Luck would have it then, when one photo-bombed a BRUV recording over an inshore wreck earlier this year. 🦑🌍 #ukunderwater

I live surrounded by tidal freshwater, if water conditions are favourable I'm occasionally tempted to drop a camera and attempt to record anything lurking. This day a fearsome looking pike scattered small fry to inspect my equipment. That ominous face shows little mercy! 👀 😬

🦈 Unfortunately this 4m long #threshershark washed in recently at Clovelly Beach, North Devon 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 It had been entangled in a ghost net and beached alive, despite it being returned to the water it later washed ashore dead. #marinelife #ukwildlife #shark #nature

We're wrapping up Year 1 of our UK Blue Shark Tagging Project (www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-stor...), and here are some highlights! -2200 M tags deployed, all by recreational anglers -1750 tag cards returned -17 recaptures reported to date, maps below. -Longest distance: 617 nm in 21 days!

My first elasmobranch recorded on a towed camera this year - I almost missed it while searching for archaeology in Bridlington Bay! 🧐 Thornback Ray, a skate (Raja clavata) by the looks, resting on substrate but demonstrating excellent camouflage among the cobbles, shells and gravel. 🦑 #UKunderwater

Starting to push towards the limit of the Humminbird 1.1MHz down-scan over an inshore wreck here, as I'm flying the transducer at an altitude of up to 27 metres. However teaming the data with PINGMapper, it manages to illustrate a variety of shoaling fish over the area to full depth really well.

While mapping a small estate wood during 2023, I was very surprised to find captured and rendered an invasive Muntjac deer when post processing - and also a surprise to estate staff. Apparently a secretive deer, this one seemed comfortable with me remaining on the opposite side! #dronephotography

After a few weeks off, I've returned to the news that 2 of our #tope have been recorded on a telemetry array in South Wales/England! Fantastic to get 1st detections of our animals and insight into #connectivity between MPA's in Wales + England. Where will our sharks go next? #ProjectSIARC #ZSL 🐟🦑🧪

Preparing for release of a floy-tagged tope (galeorhinus galeus) in Bridlington Bay, for the North Sea Shark Network and the University of Hull shark tagging programme. Tag #5712, female, total length 64", girth 26", with a penchant for fresh cut mackerel 😋🦈

An early BRUV drop that started me off... So look away now if you don't wish to see a scuttling 'consortium' of CRABS! 😱🦀🦀🦀🦀

Bug fixes, new features, & compatibility coming to an updated version (3.0??) of #PINGMapper. One is improved bankline polygon export made possible w/ shadow detection neural nets. Works on any sonar recording length. More features to come...

According to the NBN Atlas there are no records of any Striped Red Mullet (mullus surmuletus) from Yorkshire. However, I managed to record a shoal of around 30 or so on a BRUV drop here last year. An indication of warming seas causing a northward push from the south, or a lucky encounter?
