More on the war on science: how should we respond? "One priority must be to denounce these actions, to shout about their negative effects, to support researchers and to defend their ability to work and study without fear for their jobs. " Not only in the US www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Solid take about the critical minerals 'deal': -No modern assessment of REE in Ukraine. What's the viability? -War has wiped out energy infrastructure -Long timeline + capital needed to build mines Besides the predatory move, that doesn't look like a good deal for mineral security on either side.

Recommended podcast, especially for non scienty folks. On why lot of the shit in the USA is a blatant attack on science, why some scientists are afraid to stand up, and why this matters beyond the USA borders 🧪 open.spotify.com/episode/56Co...

“Son personas que trabajan, consumen y en 2022 pagaron más de 95.000 millones de dólares en impuestos federales, estatales y locales…menos del 4% tiene antecedentes criminales... Pero el mensaje es para todos: aquí ya no son bienvenidos.’ #LatinSky

Today's intro to Earth Sci class is about volcanoes. I planned to finish pointing out how we have learned from previous disasters and advanced in monitoring & mitigation. Saw this post just in time to include it at the end. Losing VDAP will make the world more vulnerable 🌋 (read the entire thread)

“He was clearly thinking, ‘Oh, we need these commodities. We can’t do too much harm here’ ... 'If the U.S. shuts the doors on our nickel, they’ll have to get it from somewhere else, and they’ll struggle to get it from somewhere else'.” Somewhere else aka China or Russia

As graduate school admission/offer letters begin to go out, I have two things to say: (1) Congrats if you get an offer and I hope it's a positive experience; and (2) if you do not get an offer, don't think you're not good enough. There are very limited spots and only so much $$ to go around. 🧪

I pinned this post back in November, and it has been incredibly useful. It's all about getting adequate gear (not even expensive one) ☃️🚴‍♀️ #bikesky #yccbike

#yycbike report. 12 Av from Sunalta heading downtown: some snow cover, nice and grippy. Bike lane moving way faster than the car lane. -25C! My coldest ride so far

#YYC folks, this is happening tomorrow (Jan 30): The next ERTHx @ucalgary.bsky.social is about the changes that have shaped our planet and the lessons they hold for us and the other Earth-bound species. And the speakers are great (as usual!) 🧪⚒️

Translated EN-ES "They are Colombians, free and dignified. They are in their land where they are loved. A migrant is not a criminal, is a human being who wants to work and move forward, to live a life" I'm actually curious if immigration is a crime or a civil offense, and how that matters

#Colombia made it to the international news today, so let this be an opportunity to remember that if you are talking about the country in South America, it’s Colombia, not Columbia

⭐️Fun Fact Friday ⭐️ Tungsten is named after the Swedish word for “ heavy stone”. Dense & hard, it also has the highest melting point of any metal. Nearly 3 X hotter than lava! Tungsten is used in a wide variety of applications that benefit from these properties such as hardmetal tools & drill heads.

This is an interesting perspective on critical metals exploration strategy & policy. It highlights the diff challenges from small and big companies also depending on jurisdiction & the fact that the search space for many critical metals is still immature www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

About Trump & Greenland “This is really a story of access to land, control of resources & political power play... It's all about the U.S. securing greater control of resources... In the case of Greenland, it's about rare earth minerals...” Not my words, but I agree calgary.ctvnews.ca/it-s-all-abo...

Only two days left to submit your abstracts to #EGU2025. We are looking forward to seeing your work on #CriticalRawMaterials #CriticalMinerals @eurogeosciences.bsky.social 🧪⚒️
