Lots of media requests today, but when a company like the HBC is in decline folks are reaching out to gain some historical insight! My voice will be tired by the end of the day…

A new exhibit has just opened at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. It showcases the history and culture of the Nuxalk First Nation from Bella Coola, B.C.

Read this on my flight home last night. An incredible page-turner but also filled with love and family connection. I highly recommend it if you’re on the hunt for a good read!

Two belongings from the HBC collection are part of the beautiful Nuxalk exhibition at MOA, and I was honoured to attend an incredible day of celebration for the opening. I love this part of my job.

Nothing says happy Valentine’s Day like a shingles diagnosis. Ouch.

Got things all set up for the Collections for Community access event on Sunday. I’m very excited to spend time with the birch bark bitings using this lovely light table. Registration is full, but we’ll offer another session again in the future!

Sorting through some provenance issues and the old timey “let’s trade” agreements between museums in the early 20th century is frustrating as f. #museums #provenance #TreatsRequired

Begging Winnipeggers to get snow tires and learn how to drive in winter. All of my possible routes to downtown were plagued with accidents and massive back ups.

Today’s run was a chilly one, with a windchill that makes it feel like -30, but invigorating! Stay warm fellow Winnipeggers!

2024 was a busy year at work, just did my final monthly tally and I responded to 188 public inquiries, 169 professional inquiries, gave 11 tours, and facilitated 37 collections visits for community members/artists/researchers. All this on top of my regular curatorial & collections mgmt duties.

The Bead-a-thon at Manitoba Museum is incredible. So many people, so many beads, all good vibes! There’s still time to check it out, on until 3pm!

Looking for something fun to do on Sunday to avoid the Sunday scaries? Come to the bead-a-thon! manitobamuseum.ca/event/manito...

Would appreciate a RT from the scientists for this one! We have 665 scientists in the spring database and I want to get us to about 1000 before we set the teachers loose on the database for January matches.

It’s a beautiful morning for a run if you stick to the streets to avoid the death trap sidewalks!

Gearing up to crush a year’s worth of mandatory IT trainings into one morning. Wish me luck!

I write a short column for Canada’s History magazine to feature artifacts & belongings from the HBC collection. I’m writing a batch now and every time I go down various rabbit holes of research. It’s time-consuming but fun! Here’s the latest one: www.canadashistory.ca/explore/muse...

If you support Canada Post workers and the need for a fair contract, use this online form from CUPW to let the CEO know! www.cupw.ca/en/campaign/...

My colleagues are organizing a super-fun fundraising event at the Manitoba Museum, a bead-a-thon! All skill levels welcome and a lot of amazing artists, including the incredible Jennine Krauchi, will be there to share their knowledge!

Very excited (and a bit nervous) to announce that I will be hiring two Postdocs for my new group(!) in Copenhagen to study the Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA which survives in present-day humans. Retweet will be much appreciated :) Link for application: candidate.hr-manager.net/ApplicationI...

Work-from-home days are rare now, but I absolutely love them! No long commute. Sweat pants. Cats. Grilled cheese for lunch. Uninterrupted writing time. It’s just so good. Hope your Fridays are going as well as mine!

Find yourself a group of facility engineers who work hard to meet your climate-controlled storage standards! I’m pretty lucky with the crew at MB Centennial Centre, constantly tinkering to keep my cold storage cold & responding to adjustment requests by Senior Conservator and I!

Last week was busy, two work-related nights out for this gal! One was a lovely stewardship event so here’s a cool pic I snapped of my colleagues showing off recently collected fossils & lichens from Churchill.

Reading the comments on my neighbourhood facebook group where somebody rightfully critiqued the Winnipeg Police service & their bloated budget…

Attended the Canada’s History gala tonight and it was lovely. It was also so nice to meet many of the colleagues I’ve worked with on the Trading Post column in-person!

Surrounded by cats, a cup of tea, sweat pants, and about to caucus with my fellow union exec for bargaining this week. It’s a good day!

If you’re looking for gift ideas, this Palestinian spice set from @islamicrelief.bsky.social is a great idea. All proceeds go towards providing emergency aid & pyschosocial support in Palestine. It comes with recipes that I’m so excited to try!

Starter packs are such a great feature! I’m finding so many interesting accounts to follow. I’d love to connect more with folks working in Canadian #museums & #heritage, so if you or someone you know fits that vague and broad description, add your name and maybe I’ll make my own starter pack!

Ok friends, help me make out this number! H4-42-340 or is it 390? And yes, when this was catalogued they wrote on the hide 🤦‍♀️. And yes, I did spend my Friday afternoon trying to clean up collections mysteries. TGIF
