As an exercise, I challenged myself to take a very boring rule of thirds composition shot on my campus, and yeah, it's a dubious honor but I think I nailed it.

This is going to be a controversial take, but I think using gender neutral casting to cast men in roles previously played by women is OK. Like, for example, the recent choice to have Leia Organa Solo played by Chris Van Hollen is unexpected, but I think it works!

Government by troll. FFSWTAFJFC

Honestly, we maybe need to legalize recreational firefights for these people. Like, you sign a waiver and you go onto a paintball range but you use live ammunition. Let them have the experience they crave, and knock their numbers down a bit too.

UNFAIR TO CHICKENS

This really is the MAGA movement. Basically everyone entitled enough that when they were told "you aren't very good at this" they didn't like, try to improve, they just got angry and decided George Soros had it out for their Particular Genius.

I want to get better at photographic composition this summer. One thing I will do I just take more photographs, but I want to do something else. Chat, should I: 1) Take an online class 2) Just watch a lot of photograpyhy YouTube 3) Try to learn from flickr 4) Read an actual book

In the interest of being informed in a well rounded way, I read that NYT interview with Trump voters today. Let me summarize: "I don't love that Trump punched me, personally, in the crotch, but still wouldn't have voted for that [expletive] Kamala." I don't know how we reach these folks.

So what color is the David Brooks color revolution gonna be? Beige is too easy. Taupe? Khaki? Antique White? Bisque? Fawn?

We're less than four full months into Trump 2.0 and David Brooks has gone full "Let's do Tahrir Square." I do always hate having to admit when I agree with David Brooks, but it does happen!

So one thing about this whole "we sent a guy to a gulag in El Salvador by mistake" saga that seems under remarked upon to me is that the US is *paying* El Salvador to keep the mistakenly imprisoned man in prison. It does seem we could *facilitate* his release by, you know, *not* doing that, yes?

I'm sorry, I was off here for like 4 hours and I missed something awful about Elon Musk? Those are my favorite awful things!

If you watch this with the audio off (I recommend this) it just looks like somebody got sloppy drunk at his daughter's wedding and is now trying, unsuccessfully, to convince the maid of honor to go to Wendy's with him

Kai Ryssdal is becoming the Joker and I am here for it

I never realized you could edge a constitutional crisis before. Congrats to whoever has that kink. You must be having the time of your life.

Bring our union brother home NOW.

It works. The government here largely works. Because we are so spoiled by how well it works, we are letting a fool convince us it is broken.

The last week has really convinced me I need to write up my version of the "lets re-encounter Phaedrus in the era of ChatGPT" post genre as soon as classes end. Perhaps before sitting down with "More Than Words" by @biblioracle.bsky.social , just to get my perspective sorted before I see his.

My students use "chat" to refer to LLM chatbots as both a noun ("I asked chat the answer") and a verb ("I chatted that answer up")

Mr. Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted by the Trump Admin and, by their own admission, wrongly deported to El Salvador. He shouldn’t have to spend another second away from his family. I'm flying to El Salvador tomorrow morning to check on his condition and discuss his return.

Big, big pine tree in my yard blew over in the wind today. I watched it happen. No damage to any property, just a big mess. Went out to take some pictures. Was taken by a little dandelion on the root ball, suddenly up in the air. That's all of us, trying to stay normal all out of place.

HARRIS WALZ 2028: LET'S CALL IT A MULLIGAN!

Writing my NPR station today to remind them that I gave them a considerable amount of money last year, and have for many years. If they stand strong, I will give even more. If they become State Media, I won't send another dime. I recommend everyone do the same.

I have worked out a neat little workflow for cleaning audio in Audacity and doing color correction on raw video + adding back in the clean audio in Davinici Resolve quick and easy, and I realize I am a man of 45 w/ a PhD & I just cracked the first thing a teenage video intern does but it feels GREAT

Woooow. Wow.

*You* are being incredibly rude and not reading my important email, whereas *I* am totally overwhelmed by a flood of spurious email messages. We are not the same.

There is no way the PRC could engineer a better PR campaign for itself than the 2nd Trump administration if it tried

Bot accounts are to social media what gold farmers were to MMOs What Altman's gonna do is what free-to-play-games did, bring that revenue stream in-house. Everyone will be followed by dozens of AI "friends" who will be lovely conversationalists, oh and they are wired to sell you coca-cola.

This whole timeline has been a conspiracy to get me to start listening to NPR's "Marketplace" again (instead of just watching the Planet Money kid on TikTok)

Ok, well that's better (but my god that GOP number... that's what a sealed information space gets you I guess)

Many things are bad, but here is a Carolina Wren singing his little Wren Song

On the one hand, you love to see it, on the other hand that +4 on "immigration" makes me want to weep

I'm 85% sure I'm pivoting my intro writing class to video next semester (more taped conversations with assigned editing as reflection, earlier) and 100% my attempt to make a joke by barging into a colleague's office and declaring "I'm pivoting to video, Jerry!" failed

Have some sympathy for the dude, turns out he used to date one of the couches in the back of the room
