This is an excellent and timely factsheet on Ukraine, U.S. v. European security assistance, and other misunderstood or lied about aspects of the war, by our friends at @thestudyofwar.bsky.social. I'll summarize a few main points below, with additional sources of my own:

- Napoleon-"He who saves his country, violates no law." - Hitler– “The good of the state stands above the law.” - Mussolini– “Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.” - Francisco Franco– “I am responsible only to God and to history.”

“Let's be clear, if not Brussels, it's Moscow. It's your decision. Putin will pull Europe apart if we don't trust each other. Europe needs a single voice, not a dozen different ones" The most pro EU speech ever from someone who knows what's at stake.

“The real “threat from within” comes from those fake British patriots loudly cheering on attacks on our own country by a hostile foreign power” @adambienkov.bsky.social 👏 www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/the-collab...

Ninety nine USAID public servants gave their lives in the line of duty.

Awful: Internal USAID memo instructs employees to refrain from talking to the media about cuts in assistance to the most vulnerable or they may get fired, WaPo reports. Trumpworld knows this is a big political problem for them. Keep the focus on it. New piece: newrepublic.com/article/1915...

From Kate Conger’s book “Character Limit” on how Musk ruined Twitter.

This is excellent. And another good example of why 'cold takes' are often better than 'hot takes'.

ICYMI: Mediamacro melodrama mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/01/medi... Everything I say here about the irrelevance of very short term movements in data applies equally well to monthly figures on the deficit. We have the OBR so we don't need to be distracted by such things.

A cautionary tale for the rest of the world that should be studied for decades. The country that imposed economic sanctions on itself.

$1,131,794,901 That's how much Big Oil has spent over the last 30 years paying off Congress to look the other way on climate action while the planet burns. Well, the planet is burning. Don't let them look away.

On the week of Trump's inauguration @timothysnyder.bsky.social's article is especially pertinent - and perhaps makes us feel a little better about our own political system? (Article republished by permission of the author)

Musk likes to say X is “citizen journalism”… …it’s anything but. REAL citizen journalism is the Bylines Network of 10 local publications that edit & publish real articles written by citizens - all IMPRESS regulated. Follow us — and these other investigative & “for public good” media sources. 🙏🏻

More Britons would rather have the EU than the US as Britain's closest trading partner The EU: 53% (+2 from 2 Mar 2020) The US: 21% (+4) Neither: 7% (-3) yougov.co.uk/topics/inter...

Too late!

Can’t be repeated often enough ‘The UK’s creative industries are vital to the economy. Valued at £124bn, they are worth more than the life sciences, aerospace and automotive industries combined. Arts and culture alone contribute an impressive £34.6bn.’ on.ft.com/42hzVmL

UK's Labour Govt is struggling to deliver promised economic growth. "Ruthless" cuts to govt spending won't do. It needs policy change. Without good purchasing power for the masses, a sustainable economy can't be built. It must redistribute income and wealth, leftfootforward.org/2025/01/labo...

I really think Grace Blakeley is on to something profoundly important. For decades on the left too many of us have sold papers, handed out leaflets and gone on marches in the hope that our ideas would magically get wider traction. What we need is to take actual action.

The @UKLabour party is losing ground because it’s trying to please Brexit believers who likely didn’t even vote Labour. The majority want to rejoin the EU but Labour is intent on trying to continue Brexit and Brexit only ensures failure. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

In my native city this morning Russians has destroyed a church.

Donald Tusk: "I am aware this is a dream: that instead of a #Brexit, we will have a #Breturn. Perhaps I am labouring under an illusion. But I'd rather be an optimist and harbour these dreams in my heart. Sometimes they come true in politics." ~AA

Scholz: Elon Musk is a danger to European democracy Musk “endangers the democratic development of Europe,” Scholz raged. Scholz is right. Musk is colluding with Putin to destroy democracy. It is not politics. It is war. www.politico.eu/article/olaf...

“A huge 68% of respondents in Britain see a benefit in reintroducing cross-Channel freedom of movement in exchange for access to the European single market” www.bbc.com/news/article...

This is Reform UK treasurer Nick Candy, appointed by Nigel Farrage. Nick Candy boasted to a FT journalist in 2010 "I don't pay tax!" (From his home in Monaco) He and his brother developed property in London through an offshore company to avoid tax. Patriotic? Anti-Establishment? It's a con.

This is so spot-on it’s scary.

Just leaving this here—you know why.

The alleviation of women's abuse "is made less likely by the mandated subservience of women by Christian fundamentalists. What is especially disappointing...is the docile acceptance by so many strong Christian women of their subjugation & restricted role." - Jimmy Carter (RIP)

Still the best two sentences on climate action.

Well played. And frighteningly accurate.
