Glad you're enjoying it!

New preprint from the lab! 🚀 Bariscan Kurtkaya, Fatih Dinc & coauthors explore how AI models remember by training 35,000+ RNNs to store numerical values for variable periods of time🧠 They show how learning rate & timing shape memory —offering insights for both AI & neuroscience! 👇

Simon Mataigne, Ralf Zimmermann, Nina Miolane An efficient algorithm for the Riemannian logarithm on the Stiefel manifold for a family of Riemannian metrics https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.11730

David Klindt, Sophia Sanborn, Francisco Acosta, Frédéric Poitevin, Nina Miolane Identifying Interpretable Visual Features in Artificial and Biological Neural Systems. (arXiv:2310.11431v1 [stat.ML]) http://arxiv.org/abs/2310.11431

Nina Miolane, Asst Prof at UCSB, presented this fascinating segmentation of the last 500 years of scientific discovery into broad eras based on the overall method used to make progress. Is AI really ushering in a new era of science, or is AI just an improved tool in the era of data-driven science?

Congratulations, Umesh!

This Black History Month, the COE spoke with Black students who represent the next generation of innovators & leaders in engineering. Akinwole Akinbolagbe, an undergrad mechanical engineering student, shared with us his experience as the only Black male undergrad in his year, & finding his community

Congratulations to Craig Hawker, a professor in the departments of Materials, Chemistry, and Biochemistry at UCSB, for being awarded the 2025 Herman F. Mark Polymer Chemistry Award.👏 Read more: https://buff.ly/4kcxad7 #UCSBEngineers #PolymerResearch

🌟 Congratulations Lisa! 🌟 We're thrilled to announce that Lisa Månsson (Materials department) is the Round 3 winner of UCSB's Grad Slam! 🎉 Her research, "Lighting the Way to Glioblastoma Containment" offers more insight into tackling one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.

🌟 Meet Lauren Washington🌟 Washington graduated from the University of San Diego in 2022 with a dual degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering. She then entered UCSB as part of the very first Bioengineering PhD cohort. She is now a 3rd-year PhD student in the lab of department chair, Beth Pruitt.

The Misha Mahowald Prize in Neuromorphic Engineering has been bestowed to Kerem Çamsarı, associate prof in the UCSB Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept, & his team of PhD students Navid Anjum Aadit, Shaila Niazi, Kemal Selçuk, & Nihal Singh, as well as postdoctoral researcher Shuvro Chowdhury.🎉

How does AI memorize information? How does ChatGPT remember your name? How do RNNs keep track of simple numbers? Our new paper led by Bariscan Kurtkaya & Fatih Dinc explores the geometry of short-term memory in neural networks—revealing limits in how information is stored!🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2502.17433

I am excited to host the next edition of the NeurReps Global Seminar Series, from @neurreps.bsky.social! @ninamiolane.bsky.social and @louisacornelis.bsky.social will be speaking on 🧠Geometric Intelligence in Minds and Machines🤖 📅Friday, Feb 21st, 11am PST Join us at UCSB (Elings,1605) or on Zoom!

🤖 New Talk: Geometric Intelligence in Minds & Machines 🧠 Available on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RtH... @louisacornelis.bsky.social & I opened the 2025 @neurreps.bsky.social Global Speaker Series ! Thanks @mathildepapillon.bsky.social Chase VDG @btolooshams.bsky.social for hosting!

Thank you to everyone who showed up in person and online! Congrats to @ninamiolane.bsky.social and @louisacornelis.bsky.social for some stellar talks🤩

Thanks for hosting this Mathilde!

Enjoying and learning a lot from this piece! I don’t know if the best reading choice for a week of holiday 🤣🤯 but 100% recommended if you are like me still getting your head around TDL/GDL. @mathildepapillon.bsky.social and co-authors 🙌👏 arxiv.org/pdf/2407.09468

Join the WBHI seminar on Monday 2/10! Dr. Russ Poldrack (@russpoldrack.bsky.social), Albert Ray Lang Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, will discuss the power of open science in advancing women’s brain health. Join us for his talk, Leveraging Open Science for Women's Brain Health👇

Hello, world. We’ve made our way to the bright side. 🦋 Let’s be friends?

CZI 🤝 WBHI @cziscience.bsky.social

Incredibly grateful to @cziscience.bsky.social for this second award supporting our work in AI for women’s brain health @bowers-wbhi.bsky.social !🌟 The WBHI advances healthcare for all by developing inclusive AI on multi-modal biomedical datasets that include phenotypes relevant to women's health.

Despite rapid advancements in AI and biomedical research, data that includes phenotypes relevant to women’s health is scarce, contributing to algorithmic bias and limiting breakthroughs in healthcare. With the @bowers-wbhi.bsky.social and @cziscience.bsky.social , we change the status-quo!

Math friends! I am at JMM in Seattle all week, feel free to reach out🍩 To learn more about Topological Deep Learning, join me in two talks! - room 607 at 9:30am today in the Special Session on Topological Machine Learning in - or room 613 tomorrow at 3:30pm
