Cloudless sky today here, allowing for these nice internal waves to show up. It changes from the homogeneous stratus Belgian skies 😃

Congratulations to François Beaufay, Şftefan Marincea, Xavier Raick and Lauriane Soret who have been awarded one of the prizes of the Science Class of the Académie Royale de Belgique. A recognition that highlights the excellence of their researches. #ULiège www.sciences.uliege.be/cms/c_134328...

Whenever I get something from the supermarket, I'm always checking the ingredients/nutritional content. Do this every second day or so. It pleasantly reminds me that there are bits of the Big Bang, novae/supernovae material, and stellar ash inside each of us. 📸 NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre 🔭

🌊 This is the first of a series of webinars organised by @wcrpclimate.bsky.social CLIVAR Marine Heatwaves Research Focus 🌊 We will have two fantastic talks by Prof Shoshiro Minobe & Hirotaka Sato, followed by a Q&A session 🌊 See details below on how to register 🌊 March 3 2025, 23:00 UTC

#DYK that 4⃣1⃣% of people employed as scientists and engineers in the 🇪🇺 are women❓ Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 👩‍🔬, we celebrate all the women shaping #CopernicusMarine & ocean science 🌊 Tag a marine or data scientist who inspires you 🔽 #WomenInScience

Swirling eddies off the Makran Coast! 🌊 Sentinel-2 captures stunning patterns in the Gulf of Oman, where ocean currents mix deep blue waters with sediment-rich coastal shallows. See how these dynamic flows shape the coastline in our latest #BCEarthGallery blog post! 👉 bit.ly/4hMoh83

We collectively haven’t been taking the plans laid out by Project 2025 seriously enough. They want to destroy NOAA so people won’t know that climate change is happening. It sounds stupid and alarmist if you haven’t been paying attention.

🌊 NASA PACE V3 processing has started. Rejoice! Highlights: Vicarous calibration aplied! New products! Algorithm refinments! This process will take some time and also there is still issues with some data so pls check the oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/reproce...

Come meet me in Liège for some waffles. Deadline extended until this coming Friday. 🌊

ok some people have asked, so we have extended the deadline until this coming Friday, last chance!! 📣 🌊 🧪

Books of 2025 list now updated with one of best non-fiction books I've ever read: Eve by @catbohannon.bsky.social Seriously, go + read as both a treat to yourself + an act of resistance against all the bad stuff going on #WomenInSTEM http://sternaparadisaea.net/books-of-2025-penguins-100-books/

🚨New Paper!🚨 Coastal mean dynamic topography (MDT) can provide a direct estimate of the average alongshore current and also a measure of area-integrated nearshore circulation. 🌊 Our #EGUhighlights paper in Ocean Science has the details - short summary below. (1/5) doi.org/10.5194/os-2...

📣 And the time has come to open the call for abstracts for the Liège Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics for 2025! 🌊 Topic: Marine CDR emerging views and challenges Date: 26-30 May 2025 Abstract deadline: 31 January 2025 More info? www.ocean-colloquium.uliege.be

Marine #heatwaves in the #Mediterranean are set to intensify and persist across depths, posing a major threat to marine ecosystems, even within protected areas. This 3D study reveals long-lasting and intense MHWs under #ClimateChange, challenging #conservation🧪🌍🌐 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This is a fascinating story. There’s an excellent book called Madhouse at the End of the Earth by Julian Sancton about it, and a small exhibition in the Royal Museum of Armed Forces & Military History in Brussels

This weekend I visited a space-based expo made with building blocks (mainly lego but there were other brands as well). I got hooked by this build of a satellite view of earth, and keep wondering how difficult would it be to make one myself 😅🌊🛰

Marine CDR community: The abstract deadline (31st January) is approaching for the mCDR Liège Colloquium | 26 to 30 May 2025 I'll be there to meet many friends and colleagues to reflect how (if) mCDR could evolve. Please consider coming! 🌊 www.ocean-colloquium.uliege.be/cms/c_142728...

Today, the Sentinel-2C spacecraft will take over from S2A in providing operational data. This is wonderful news, and will ensure continuity of the Sentinel data for many years to come. Great effort from the S2C commissioning team! See here for more info: sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel...

Great opportunity to improve your skills on ocean remote sensing! 🌊

I was looking again at these fantastic Sentinel 2 images over sea ice. I know nothing about ice rheology but the patterns of the fractures in the ice are fascinating. I can't help thinking there is an ocean eddy in the middle of this image, dragging the ice around. odl.bzh/723iJTqJ

SST charts are running again for 2025! Moving forward, both 2023 and 2024 values get their own colors for context. As of January 15, all but one region are above their 1991-2020 average value. Also, the Caribbean Sea is warmer than it was this time last year. kouya.has.arizona.edu/tropics/SSTm...

So, we have the global temperatures for the whole of 2024. It was the warmest year on record (1850-2024) across six widely used datasets: HadCRUT5, Berkeley Earth, GISTEMP, NOAAGlobalTemp, ERA5 and JRA-3Q.

Birds and snow 😍

Super handy animation from Tim showing why 2024 being above 1.5ºC does not mean the long term global warming trend is there yet. Although we're ~ 1.37 (according to ERA5). 2030 is the @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social prediction also: apps.climate.copernicus.eu/global-tempe... 🌏🌊🧪⚒️📈🌡️

5 days till #EGU abstract submission deadline. I'm convening Machine Learning for Ocean Sciences, with @aida-alvera.bsky.social @brajard.bsky.social @redouanelg.bsky.social. Very excited to have solicited speaker Julie Deshayes. Send us your abstracts meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU25/sessio...

⚠️ Rapport annuel @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social online.

2024 @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social #climate data out today: 📈 2024 - first year more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial; for ERA5 it was 1.6ºC 🌡️ the past 10 years were the 10 warmest years on record 📈 2024 was warmest year for all continental regions, except Antarctica and Australasia 🌍🌡️🧪⚒️🌊
