Here is a short piece about writing science books for kids. This is the first official mention of my book SPARK! (This title comes out Oct 21, 2025.) sjawards.aaas.org/news/writing...

Consider getting a copy of a book by an African American author about an African American inventor. You’ll find the underlying curiosity at play is pretty universal. www.possiblefuturesbooks.com/item/fDcyhWd...

The automatic oil cup was a way to lubricate trains. Before it, workers had to oil parts by hand. This invention was patented by Elijah McCoy. The quality was so good that people requested “The Real MoCoy” when buying one.

Frederick McKinley Jones is a STEM hero. He’s the father of refrigerated trucks. If you are eating food that came from far away, you have him to thank.

Jim West is a STEM hero. He made a technology that is in everyone’s pockets. The microphone. www.npr.org/2022/02/01/1...

Elijah McCoy—of the Real McCoy fame—invented, produced, and patented one of the cutest designs for a lawn sprinkler.

Lonnie Johnson, a Black engineer, invented the Supersoaker. #blackhistorymonth

As I make my tea this morning, I am grateful for the ingenuity of Norbert Rillieux. He was an African American inventor from New Orleans who created a way to turn sugar juice into sugar.

African American inventor Philip Bell Downing filed a patent for the letter box, which led to our modern day mailbox. (US462093A)

African American inventor Marie Van Brittan Brown invented a closed-circuit television security system, which put us on the path to modern home security systems used today. If you have a Ring or ADT, you have Marie Van Brittan Brown to thank.

Dr. Edward Bouchet was the first African American to get a doctorate in the US. He got his PhD in physics at Yale in 1876.

Prince Rogers Nelson, yes Prince, was the holder of a design patent. He was a brilliant musician and inventor. #BHM

Good news. My new picture book comes out in October. Spark: Jim West’s Electrifying Adventures in Creating the Microphone by Ainissa Ramirez, illus. by Setor Fiadzigbey, launching the Black Innovators series. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

...and now you finally know. #BHM

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, was also a patent holder. He made special shoes to make it possible for him to lean far without falling. #STEM #STEAM #blackhistorymonth

Look, Mom. I made it to Harvard.

The Real McCoy? Well, that was used to designate the high quality of products made by African American inventor Elijah McCoy. #BlackHistoryMonth

For Black History Month we are highlighting Black voices in S.T.E.M.! Even if you don't consider yourself a "science and math" person, these are some timely and fantastic reads for everyone. Check out the display in store, or online here: https://buff.ly/3Q6Q5Iv

"The Alchemy of Us" by Ainissa Ramirez is a really awesome book. Captivating storytelling about civilisational inventions and how they shaped our understanding of the world and how they changed human culture.

my most recent discovery after reading Alchemy of Us (which is great, btw) is the idea of not sleeping through the whole night being a cultural norm for centuries. First sleep - waking up at night and doing something - second sleep. And how the clocks and watches and precise time changed it.

As I consider making up my bed this morning, I’m grateful for the ingenuity of African American inventor Bertha Berman, who patented the fitted bed sheet. If you don’t have to make hospital corners, you have Ms. Berman to thank.

The Industrial Revolution in England was enabled by 18th century enslaved Jamaican clockmakers. Jacob Lawrence’s “Watchmaker” painting reminds me of this hidden history.
