We are past the point where statements from elected officials do anything. We need to be in the "Democratic officials send in armed cops to free the illegally kidnapped" phase

Equally as important as the oft cited 3.5% of a population hitting the streets to create change number is the need for a movement to have a specific demand. Indian independence, civil rights, gov response to AIDs crisis were clear demands millions could push for. What is the demand of this moment?

Mass attendance of the "No Kings" protests are good only in so far as it translates to organisation & concrete action. The fact that the 'leadership' of the 'movement' seems intent on limiting any further action, & specific expressions of ire/solidarity at the events however is deeply worrying.

Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.

Man I’m not criticizing anyone who gets their ass up and marches around for something good, I don’t care if they’ve got a sign like “Domuld Drumpf hope u like Hamberders” they bought markers for that shit good for them

I totally get Edgar Allan Poe. If I was minding my business and some fuckass bird showed up at my house just to be like “Ay man, your girlfriend died! Forever bitchless!” I’d crash out too.

yep! unpaywalled:

Just once, I want to see a mayor give a speech like "I am calling on the good people of our city to rise up, flood into the streets, and push these traitors out of our neighborhoods"

Sometimes protest is about protecting dignity, not advancing the cause of a political party

Solidarity with LA! Drive the fascists out of our cities and protect our neighbors!

ACAB includes your friendly neighborhood cop from your "sanctuary city" who will absolutely show to to help ICE kidnap your neighbors

I don't care if there is "nuance" to the issue, conceding to the right that trans women shouldn't play in women's sports is not worth any gains it may bring. It would inevitably lead us down the same path as the UK where trans people legally cannot exist and that's unacceptable

the thing about politics, especially in this moment, is that people need an enemy. if you think a bunch of technocratic tinkering can make things better, great! it might be good policy, but it’s not a good message.

This is maybe the dorkiest thing I've ever put to words, but a big part of what radicalized me to the left was reading Kaiserreich lore in 2020. Something about the IWW fighting a war to unionize the US pushed the "fuck yeah" button in my brain

This is a good piece by Arno on a complex topic. I think the question of whether political violence is "antisemitic" may be ultimately fruitless, given the term has been such a site of ideological struggle and even outright manipulation by powerful groups. There are better questions to ask.

Wow, it's almost like we learned nothing from the rise of the Nazis and the collapse of the Weimar Republic because our own slide into fascism is looking mighty fucking similar
