New mechanism of gene transfer! With @tcostalab.bsky.social @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social, we discovered that cf-PICIs form tail-less elements that, once released, spread among different bacterial species by hijacking tails from various phages. More exciting news soon! shorturl.at/kRJqE

PhD opportunity in St Andrews on plasmids, antibiotics and defence systems, in collaboration with Helen Alexander in Edinburgh. Funding via BBSRC EastBio, please share & pass on to anyone interested! #microsky🦠🧫🧬 www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

I just made a first release of TNA - new tool to compare 2 bacterial genomes. Is shamelessly inspired by ACT, but should be simpler to use. Drag-n-drop two genomes: it runs BLAST for you and then you can visualize. For Mac, Windows 11, Linux tna.readthedocs.io

The Thomas & Parkin labs are looking for a motivated PhD student to work across the biology/chemistry interface to help UK biotech company HydRegen improve biocatalyst production. The project is to understand & engineer increased nickel uptake in bacteria as part of BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience DTP.

Get ready to dance, our paper – Phage DisCo: targeted discovery of bacteriophages by co-culture – has been pre-printed! 🪩 This has been a really fun project to work on with @sianowen.bsky.social, @baym.lol, @nquinoneso.bsky.social, and our two talented undergrads Kesther and Carmen!

Hopefully the Microbiology Society will make an account here soon, but for now, here's a video from their knocking out AMR project youtu.be/hXr2Rn9OTOg?... Please share widely :) #microsky #scicomm #science
