The Trump-Vance State Department just approved $3.01 billion in arms & equipment sales to Israel $2.04 billion in bombs $675.7 million in bombs & weapon guidance kits $295 million in bulldozers Administration said "an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale," waiving congressional review

Remember: the Montgomery bus boycott was only conceived as a 1-day boycott. Most longterm activists like Rosa Parks & ED Nixon worried about whether people would do it. Only after the successful first day did it change to indefinite. It was sustained by a carpool system, giving 10,000 rides a day.

When the AAUP chapter teach-in on the crises facing higher ed brings it all back to the Congo. Love to see it. Grateful for my faculty colleagues. 🇨🇩

“They tried to stop cop city, but we fought back.” Nice to see Dickens campaigning on open warfare against the people of Atlanta. 115,000 voters signed a petition to stop cop city—that’s more than twice the number of votes this hack has ever received in an election.

INBOX: Atlanta City Council member Amir Farokhi will become Head of School at The Galloway School and will *not* run for election. He is the second member of the Council to step down after President @dougship.bsky.social. Socialist @kelseabondatl.bsky.social is a favorite for the vacant D2 seat.

“To read ‘My Country, Africa’ is to be reminded of the heady sense of promise and possibility that still makes the years of decolonization combust like exhilarating flares in a long night of reaction and retrenchment.” Excited for this new edition of Andrée Blouin’s memoir.

anyways, it’s a great day to pre-order Garrett Felber’s new book. Your pre-order also buys a copy for an incarcerated person. www.akpress.org/a-continuous...

At last, we've gathered together 5 years worth of texts, podcasts, and artworks about the uni currency project into a single, easily-accessible webpage. Check it out when you have a moment.

Georgia lawmakers continue their assault on academic freedom, now threatening to deny loans, grants, and scholarships for “disruptive” student protestors, vaguely defined. GA folks: call your state reps and tell them to vote NO on HB 602. action.cair.com/a/stop-hb-602

I will say that Elon is helping me explain to students how talk of "saving taxpayer money" is usually just a euphemism for "expanding the reserve army of labor." Make it plain, brother. Make it plain.

We advance understandings of monetary history, theory, and practice that foreground intersectional, ecological, and ethical responsibility, and foster democratic forms of monetary agency.

I’ve never seen or heard so much discussion in legacy media of the west’s rapacious demand for rare earth minerals. And that discussion is not being framed well—at all. Just increasingly blunt apologia for imperialism.

If you’re gonna get sick during marathon training, best to do so the week before the race, right?

UCLA spent $12.3 million to suppress pro-Palestine protests, resulting in over 200 arrests and withheld degrees. All this to silence students standing against genocide.

This Fort Knox crypto scam adds a whole new layer to that Hayekian bullshit about wresting money from the "hands of government" through some "sly roundabout way."

Excited to host the AAUP Summer Institute at Morehouse this year. Re-upping a little piece I wrote two years ago on Morehouse (and HBCUs more broadly) and the academic labor movement: news.morehouse.edu/faculty-blog... Join @aaup.bsky.social. Get organized.

Meanwhile, we are going to be writing every day in support and defense of democracy and the collective struggle to return the profits of labor to the working class that produces them. Subscribe to Labor Notes! labornotes.org/bu

Another day, another WashPost development to prove the point.

🧵 #Unis4All @moneyontheleft.bsky.social ‘we propose that universities circumvent negligent state and federal legislatures and self-finance future expenditures by issuing their own credits called “Unis.” […] Unis secure […] the freedom to reimagine higher education beyond the crisis.’

Israeli-made surveillance technologies and “training expeditions” are accelerating the militarization of campus police departments across the US.

7000 people killed in the Congo in January alone. This barely makes a blip in the white global media.

Truly frightening to see civil-military relations experts be so distraught today. I hadn't understood that no POTUS has ever replaced the top brass 1 month into office plus fired the JAGs. We’re in autogolpe territory, more so if Trump changes the head of Northern Command.

I've written about the method in the DOGE USAID madness. It's not bullying as power, it's good Wall Street Consensus on steroids, by and for private equity www.phenomenalworld.org/analysis/how...

“There is no better perch from which to execute Galbraith’s bubble-prolonging playbook than the shadow presidency.”

NEW PIECE: On the shorter side for my recent writings, I take a chance to step back and return to the big picture. Why should we care if the Trump administration, and Musk's DOGE, are acting unconstitutionally? The answer is not as simple as it might seem. www.crisesnotes.com/why-should-w...

“In a move eerily similar to the recent hostile takeovers of federal offices by the Trump Administration, the City of Atlanta Department of Law carried out a raid of the once-independent Office of Inspector General (OIG) this week…”

New Orleans is one the best running cities in the world. Perfectly flat, just a crescent-shaped grid of the most beautiful architecture. Amazing to me that this city no longer hosts a marathon.

The US deep state has been detrimental to democracy (think mega donors), press freedom (think Julian Assange), Peace (think countless wars). BUT Trump is not dismantling it for these reasons. He is simply removing all obstacles to his own dictatorship chrishedges.substack.com/p/the-purge-...

“… X away our right to life.” More prescience in that line than Pat Parker could have imagined. blackagendareport.com/poem-where-w...

Calling the Democrats “cowards” suggests that they're scared to do what's right when they show no fervent interest in being an opposition. They're largely colluders, not cowards. Many want their base to think they're cowards to maintain investment in the idea that they can be pushed to do better.

"The money question is up for grabs for the first time in nearly a century. Now, the relevant question is no longer, Who will find the money? It is, instead, Who will create it?"

“There’s no question I get depressed sometimes. I think both in terms of the neoliberal academy and the authoritarian academy, sometimes I feel like we’ve lost. But then I have conversations with students.” -Annelise Orleck www.thenation.com/article/soci...

As this little shitcoin and his lackeys fire government workers for sport, may we lean on the legacy of Coretta Scott King and all those who have fought for full employment and a public job guarantee. Same fight, new phase.

A hard thing about this time that doesn't get talked about enough is seeing many people act as if everything is unprecedented when it's not. These are issues that movements have worked on for so long. It can be frustrating, even as welcomed sincere outrage builds. Find support amongst your people.

“Democratic leadership proceeds as if this insanity reflects some kind of popular uprising, as if it serves a real constituency and not a few billionaires and their fanatical little helpers.“

“All over the world, wherever there are capitalists, freedom of the press means freedom to buy up newspapers, to buy writers, to bribe, buy and fake ‘public opinion’ for the benefit of the bourgeoisie.” -Lenin

NEWS: The M23 rebels and their allies have seized Bukavu, the second-largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

With everything going on in our industry, a periodic reminder that I’m the higher ed editor for @publicbooks.bsky.social. If you have something to get off your chest about higher ed, pitch me. Not looking for quick takes, but thoughtful scholarship and commentary that makes sense of our moment.
