can't believe it's 2025 and i'm stressed about tariffs and measles, like am i a character in an american girl book

They want us to complain about the postal service, the public bus, Amtrak, public schools. They want that miniscule, repeated buy-in. Refuse it. Appreciate and care for our common good. That's daily and practical solidarity

Every single announcement from this administration is some variation on Lord Farquaad's "Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make". In this case there's an added "have fun!" to spice things up.

Remember, years and years ago, when we wanted to believe that Susan Collins’ “concerns” might translate into conscionable action? Ha. Ha. Ha.

Good for the ABA for speaking out again: "We will not stay silent in the face of efforts to remake the legal profession into something that rewards those who agree with the government and punishes those who do not."

If you work at or attend a college or university, share this w/the General Counsel’s office. Tell them stop obeying in advance. The @legaldefensefund.bsky.social has this important analysis of the Trump Administration’s “Dear Colleague” letter to higher ed leaders. www.naacpldf.org/education-de...

the thing about using the "it's all Soros paid protestors" narrative to deny that your actions are unpopular is that the main thing it accomplishes is making your actual constituents very very angry

With ample thanks to @thetattooedprof.bsky.social, @kfitz.info, @kwazana.bsky.social and @cjdenial.bsky.social, my article on antihostility pedagogies in the medical humanities classroom is now available in Profession. profession.mla.org/antihostilit...

Yes, these are ridiculous. But we must also defend more "woke" grants caught in Cruz's net, like my PhD student's NSF dissertation grant on how air monitoring does not serve the needs of (mostly Black) people the most polluted zip codes. It was funded through peer review and is hugely important.

Newsletter: Microsoft pulled back on over a gigawatt of planned data center capacity, suggesting that they do not think there is a growth future in generative AI. Meanwhile, SoftBank, the only company that can afford to fund OpenAI, has to take out loans to do so. www.wheresyoured.at/power-cut/

It's here! In My Boots Publication Day! And what a journey it has been. Thank you to all the good, kind, generous, lovely folks who helped me get to this day. You know who you are. My gratitude is unending. tinyurl.com/2r22s5bt #bookrelease #appalachiantrail #hikeyourownhike #writingcommunity

Congratulations to @amandakjaros.bsky.social - former LM EIC & longtime editor - on the publication of In My Boots: A Memoir of Five Million Steps Along the Appalachian Trail!

The Social Security Administration is cutting 7,000 jobs and closing half of its regional offices. It's no coincidence that Elon Musk called Social Security a "ponzi scheme." They're gutting the program YOU'VE PAID INTO to make room for more billionaire tax cuts. Now is the time to speak up.

Trump and Musk are doing a $350 billion pump and dump with your tax money. Trump’s “Crypto Reserve” is a money laundering scheme and you are being robbed blind.

Today!! I’ll be speaking at San Francisco State University with adoptee author Kit Myers, whose new book The Violence of Love is out now!

my whole approach to life right now is excuse me but wtf

hey what if we turned the government into a pump and dump scheme run by dodgy money-laundering oligarchs

Let’s see, Donald Trump launched his crypto business right before taking office. Melania did the day before the inauguration. Junior launched a new one too. Oh, and of course Eric did.

When you go to Republicans’ town halls & events to complain about govt services and benefits being cut, or your friends & family members losing their jobs, ask these Trump-worshipping elected officials to explain how taxpayers buying billions in crypto will make your life better.

We are firing Rangers at National Parks, scientists & aid workers that treat/prevent/research disease and feed the poor, & disabled vets helping fellow vets at VA hospitals, but the good news is we are going to buy a shit ton of crypto so Trump & his friends can make billions.

We love @joankwonglass.bsky.social's work & are excited for her book tour! Here's one of her poems from 2021, "Making Frybread With My Son": literarymama.com/articles/dep...

Today my students and I are going to nerd out over the details of the 1934 Social Security Act and the 1939 amendments in my History of Marriage class. The continuing ramifications of those laws, whew!

“Did you even say thank you?”

If you made $10,000 every day and never spent a cent, from when the Declaration of Independence was signed, to the time you're reading this, you still wouldn't have a billion dollars. Elon Musk has that more than 190x over and he’s cutting people’s SNAP money (just ~$6.16/day)

Hat tip to @alanferrier.bsky.social.

H/T from fb planetejobn and shared by my BIL Chris

Staten Island — you are fed up, and you SHOWED UP! Over 100 constituents in #NY11 came to hold Rep. Nicole Malliotakis accountable for voting to strip #medicaid and SNAP away from over 100k people in the district. We put this together in 2 days, on SI. MOTIVATED. @indivisible.org @maddow.msnbc.com

You can criticize Trump and co.’s horrendous treatment of Zelensky without praising King Charles. “Now THAT’S a real king!” Yes, Charles really is a king. That’s not something we’re aspiring to here.

Elon Musk called Social Security a "ponzi scheme." This is absolute rubbish. Social Security has paid every benefit owed to every eligible American for 85 years. Perhaps the bigger "ponzi scheme" is the $38 billion spent by taxpayers to prop up his corporations?

Richest guy in the world telling us we can’t afford to have our government fund cancer research.

“Have you said thank you once? Just say thank you” is what abusers say.

Power is not fixed

A single person took out a FULL PAGE AD in the Sunday NY Times with a letter titled “A Plea For Donald Trump To Resign”

Far too many of my savvy friends and family still on Meta seem unaware of the actual news cycle right now? I’m not shocked, but I’m shocked, you know? Amazing how a tool used effectively for the Egyptian Revolution is now the douchiest of propaganda machines.

"[The] Rodney King case...I remember that was my first real taste of activism. And so I think that's why I chose that particular time period for my secondary storyline..." Listen to Nancy Johnson, author of People of Means, on This Mama Is Lit! literarymama.substack.com/p/nancy-john...

After years of talking to Trump supporters my view of them has become very simple: They want socialist, even sometimes progressive reforms but they want them from someone who makes those reforms feel powerful and masculine and they want to make sure the people they don't like don't benefit from them

But the problem now, of course, is that the percentage of the population acting as if EOs are laws is having the desired effect of compliance and fear. Not enough people are saying: da fuq you think you are?

If you've been calling Congress, keep calling & if not, start-we're getting their attention. We had a good visit to a Congressional office yesterday to discuss science funding & the staffer told us how busy they've been-usually the Senate shwitchboard gets 64 calls/minute-now they're getting 1600 🧪

“Why aren’t you wearing a suit?”

Zelenskyy stayed in Kyiv while Russia was bombing the city and sending in hit squads to kill him. J.D. Vance fled to an undisclosed location because some peaceful protesters yelled at him while he was on vacation. This is why I believe victory over these people is still possible.

still in shock (even with all the insane things going on) that to get any scrap of useful human-produced information in 2025 you have to add the word "reddit" to every google search

I do miss Kansas constituents’ penchant for absolutely not having it even for their own party. I had more complex conversations about politics across party lines in Kansas than anywhere else I’ve lived. Roger Marshall has always been a coward.
