From the entrance to the exit, you can now spend several hours on these sites and not encounter very many staff at all who have actual contracts with the institution. Public-facing elements of these museums are now largely soulless and light on ethics, and I'd wager that the public can tell.

My sister has lived in the USA for 5yrs or so and now when she returns to the UK is absolutely baffled how much we care about recycling etc. Just goes to show it’s catching.

...Masterplan being an example (it literally just seems to exist as a PowerPoint year to year), and as a Highlander, stuff like the A9 dualling, proper land reform, the ditched fishing quotas, the bizarre appeal of Forbes a while back. It's quite disillusioning, relative to earlier years of devo.

I think in all honesty I'm finding myself (and I'm not naturally cynical at all) keeping in the loop on a range of policy stuff from afar and muttering "that's gone absolutely nowhere since the last time I read about it years ago, and it'll have consequences" to an increasing degree. Glasgow's...

But, without being an activist or a member of a specific party, it's pretty natural and likely commonplace for someone like me to reflect on a party/government/national political vibe very much in the round. There's been quite a lot of polling/voting lately that shows an enthusiasm deficit.

Do new payments signify radicalism, though? Insomuch as are they bettering those people's position on where they might have been in 2010? The legislative agenda at Holyrood since I worked there for the SNP has been getting sparser over the years, and there does genuinely seem less to talk about.

Holding the line on the tax differential with the rest of the UK has been important, but again I guess I look at the long abandoned talk of council tax reform etc. and just kinda question the change narrative. Put it this way – it doesn't feel like a golden age for the various structures that exist.

I guess it depends, in the sense that many of the new Scottish DWP actions are often ameliorations of backsliding UK-wide by the Tories over the last 14yrs. Stuff like the baby boxes get me a lot more excited, but it's felt like there's been precious little of it lately (even just on paper).

Like...the fact that SPT/Glasgow theoretically had powers to take over buses for years but Holyrood has only just activated that particular line in a bill passed in 2019, despite Manchester showing how long it takes, is the kinda small policy thing that gives off turgid, ripe for change vibes.

England has different needs, but the debate over combined authorities, mayors, bus franchising etc. often highlight to me a certain amount of flat footedness in Scottish politics in comparison. It may often be starting from a healthier place, but there seems to be no rush to galvanise change.

As a Scot in London for 11yrs, I think the thing I'm regularly struck by when I return is that its politics are increasingly dry, stuffy, and unradical, and yet if you hint at that...there's a backlash. Holyrood definitely feels like it's settled into a comfortable niche, and the same with councils.

It also works on the basis of sleep deprivation/training. For a week it was only allowing me 5hrs sleep max per night. You’re allowed to add 15mins per week from that baseline 💀

Yeah, Sleepio. I just downloaded it and hooked it up to my NHS account and it helped a lot. But it’s very tough. Like…”you have to get out of bed and do something after 15mins of failing to sleep”, “get out of bed the second your alarm goes off”, “no stimulation for 1hr30 before bed”.
