Bye bye WaPo subscription.

The Diggins Memorial Lecture coming up historyprogram.commons.gc.cuny.edu/3-5-what-is-...

My zone (academiaā€”in particular, the humanities) has been flooded. Now, what??? šŸ˜³

Not important (in the scheme of things), butā€¦ REALLY?! After self-parody comesā€¦ ???

Go Article III! coag.gov/app/uploads/...

People are gonna be like, so where were you when an entire Super Bowl crowd yelled ā€œA minor?ā€

This is what local news orgs should be doing now: "In 2024, the Univ. of Alabama was in the top 1% of NIH-funded institutions. The university, Alabamaā€™s largest public employer, has received more than $1 billion in NIH funding. NIH grants in Alabama supported 4,769 jobs" www.al.com/news/2025/02...

Yes, please!

Yes!

Here is the guidance in full. The wording is very broad. This should help a lot of organizations and people.

On birthright citizenship, no president can end it "on day one" or any other day. It's in the Constitution - the 14th amendment. Indeed it was one of the key goals of that "new birth of freedom" - formerly enslaved people had parents who were not citizens. Media, please take note!

Itā€™s Article TWO for a reason. Come on Article ONE: DO YOUR JOB! (Iā€™d be happy for Article THREE to step up too, but thatā€™s obviously more complicated. Some good early signs there though.)

NO ONE WANTS THIS

There is simply no plausible argument that the president has the constitutional authority to refuse to spend appropriated funds because he doesnā€™t like how the money is being spent. The legality of policy impoundments is just not a close question.

Poof! And there goes the ā€œtake careā€ clause! I thought I could get through thisā€¦.Honestly, I donā€™t know anymore.

The US is a multi-racial nation. But how do you tell the stories of voluntary European migrants alongside African Americans (some free, some enslaved)? The NYC Tenement Museum takes it on. See also the books of @kevinkenny.bsky.social @schoeppner.bsky.social Samantha Seeley, & my book out in 2026.

Well that didnā€™t take long! We seem to have boatloads of negativity over here, and thatā€™s among ā€œfriends,ā€ broadly speaking.

Huh. Seems to be a rush to cut taxes by Democrats (here in NY too). Couldnā€™t come up with any new ideas?

Such a good point. Iā€™d add that laws are not self-legitimating either.

New NEH/AHRC partnership "to encourage more international collaboration in humanities research between US and UK scholars focused on examining the societal impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and ensuring such technologies are deployed and used safely and responsibly" bit.ly/3Wilwmw

Had to go to the ER recently (kidney stone), and it reminded me how much of medicine really is narrative. In triage, the doctors and nurses were begging me to tell a story that would help them understand, a story with a history. Funnily enough, I was pretty sure I had the DX downā€”no story required.

I have long thought that as long as I did not follow anyone on the far right on social media, I could avoid #Hitler photos. Silly me.

Kenneth???

Amen, Adam. Itā€™s soul-crushing too.

This is your semi-regular reminder that the cheapest way to get an academic book into your eager hands/brain is almost always by buying from the publisher with a discount code, not by buying from a (cough) internet retailer. If youā€™re not at #AHA25 you can still use discount code HAHA25 thru 1/20.

Great example to set for students. Some disciplines may use AI to good effect. The examples below suggest the opposite. I was disappointed not to see more critical engagement with the use of AI at #AHA25.

Hints?

#Skystorians coming to #AHA2025! Join me, Tanisha Ford, @chadwilliams.bsky.social @profgabriele.com @lollardfish.bsky.social & @adapalmer.bsky.social as we discuss the nuts, bolts, and FUN of writing narrative histories for trade publishers. Sun., Jan. 5, 3:30 p.m. Sheraton Empire Ballroom West.

Huh. Itā€™s almost as if capitalism trumpsā€¦. wapo.st/4gnEm3L
