DOGE is gutting the federal agency that leads climate research and oversees the weather service, laying off 10% of staff (with the ultimate goal of eliminating 50%) and cancelling office leases, @justcalma.bsky.social scoops www.theverge.com/news/622990/...

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.

Tell us: Have you departed a job in the federal government since the Trump administration began? www.bostonglobe.com/2025/02/18/b...

To probationary federal employees who have been terminated: Democracy Forward has filed a first-of-its-kind class-wide complaint with the Office of Special Counsel. If civil servants want to join in the complaint, you can email [email protected]

Foreign ownership of US forestland increased 53% between 2012 and 2022

This is really well done

Here is the issue that has caused so many headaches among climate mitigation researchers - inventory estimates of net land use change emissions differ substantially from global bookkeeping models. lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep...

We've released the Berkeley Earth temperature update for January 2025: berkeleyearth.org/ja... It was the warmest January on record at 1.64C above preindustrial levels, and 0.09°C above the prior record set in 2024.

NEW: @noaa.gov offices have been asked to search their grants for climate-related keywords, among other executive order-related terms. This could put climate grant-funding in the crosshairs if/once the judicial order holding the funding freeze back is lifted. www.axios.com/2025/02/09/n...

I’ve read most if not all of his books. Time to spin back through them

The February issue of #NorthernLogger is out. Excited to have another photo of mine on the cover! This is a load of firewood (with a local destination) leaving a #NH #Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary where they are doing a harvest to improve wildlife habitat. #logging #trucking #forestry #forestryfriday

Mark your calendars for the next seminar of the Intl. Tree Mortality Network @treemortality.bsky.social: On Feb 18, the wonderful @dudney-joan.bsky.social will tackle the exiting topic of disturbance interactions under climate change. “rampant conflicts of interest inherent to unregulated carbon markets”

Good news: recruitment for this position has reopened after brief pause! I’ll likely keep it open for another week; if you are interested apply soon!

I have put a hold on this position for the time being. Hoping to reopen it soon once I get the go ahead from the funder.

If you or your organization has a federal grant even remotely related to climate, environmental justice, or any kind of work at all related to making the world a better place -- I want to know how you're doing and can help you tell your story in the press. Contact me securely on Signal: 3162958947

Reiterating my call to fellow federally-funded scientists: Call your reps, tell them how this hurts science and everything good that comes from science (Also non-scientists, and scientists without federal funding! But the more of us who can directly speak to the impacts of these freezes the better)

I am keeping hope, but really worried about the future of Inflation Reduction Act funding for forest landowner support

I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

This ain’t good folks

If you rely upon data from a .gov website, go download it now. #protip

Anyone know why the FIA EVALIDator site is down? Hoping this is just a blip…

fires have destroyed nearly 11 million offset credits in California's program. But the buffer pool had only set aside a little more than six million credits to compensate for losses from wildfire. Those six million credits were meant to last for the next 100 years. carbonplan.org/research/buf...?

📢 I'm looking to bring on a new member of my team in the UVM Extension Forestry program! See link for more information on the Extension Forestry Outreach Coordinator position and how to apply. www.uvmjobs.com/postings/78767

As someone who doesn't do research on fire, but has to talk about--more and more--in courses on environmental science and environmental change, the insight available from people in these starter packs is invaluable: bsky.app/starter-pack... and bsky.app/starter-pack...

I’d take this in red

This job sounds super cool - Field Ecology Technician/Lead Field Ecologist in the Forest Futures Lab www.caryinstitute.org/about/career...

Do you ever get confused about the difference between sap and resin? If so, and you were around me, I hope I didn't yell at you about it...here's a little video which clarifies the difference. youtu.be/idDWkljii0Q

Late-breaking job ad: The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA) is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Plant Evolutionary Biology!!! More details below. Please repost!

whiplashing back to wet in New England: daily streamflows

Extreme floods followed by drought. This is the double-edged sword of climate change.

I’m recruiting for a graduate student to work on forest climate resilience at the University of Vermont! For more information, see the first listing here www.uvm.edu/rsenr/gradua... Please share widely!

Finally went to look at the #Helene rain totals. Put it off because of long data outage with key climate center in Asheville during aftermath. #uswx

We have an open postdoc position in the Quantitative Ecosystem Dynamics lab at UC Berkeley: forms.gle/Nx1EHYiCv3yR... in the areas of ecohydrology, land-atmosphere interactions, and global change ecology. Please spread the word!

Halfway through this - excellent. Stay tuned for a review!

Going to be recruiting my first grad student soon (MS) - any advice?

It’s not often that I see wood from butternut (Juglans cinerea). It’s a beautiful wood, lighter in color than its relative the black walnut (Juglans nigra). Butternut trees are listed as endangered by IUCN because of introduced fungi that causes butternut canker.

Job alert: Restoration Ecologist - Looking for someone with strong conservation stewardship experience (fire, heavy equipment, animal handling). Work onsite at The Nature Conservancy's Nachusa Grasslands near Dixon, IL. For details and to apply, visit careers.nature.org and search Job ID 55855

Re-sharing a thread before I delete it from x because I think it’s a useful one: In a work email, we had a fantastic thread about the use of "stakeholder" — many collaborators have stated they do not want this term used, and scholarship has supported this.

Do you want to join my plant ecophysiology lab studying plant stress and mortality? I am hiring a biological scientist, a permanent research support position. Job posting and more information available here: explore.jobs.ufl.edu/en-us/job/53...

Hi Climate folks! Gonna try asking Blue-sky a question for a NPR story 🌏🎧🎙️🔌 When y'all say "a gigawatt is enough to power about XXX U.S. homes" what number do y'all use for the XXX? Will triple fact check with trusted energy experts, but figured I'd see what the sky-hive thinks. Thanks!
