#WorldPressFreedomDay 🔥 @froomkin.bsky.social

Feel like the President being obviously bribed in ways that violate the constitution should be a bigger deal.

Trump’s EO defunding PBS and NPR will likely be struck down as an abuse of executive power, but it is another example of Trump’s attack on the free press. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/...

Five former National Weather Service directors have taken the unusual step of signing onto an open letter warning that cuts to the organization by the Trump administration may soon endanger lives.

JUST IN: Judge HOWELL rules forcefully in favor of Perkins Coie against Trump's punitive executive order, comparing him to a Shakespearean character who famously called to "kill all the lawyers" in order to amass power. ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show...

Donald Trump spent $23M on golf (up to mid march). Over 56 days, he spent $410k of our tax dollars each day at his own clubs. That is one 3-year NSF grant per day. Waste and abuse, my ass. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Q: What's the plural of regex? A: regex{2,}

‘Kennedy told reporters that there were "many, many good ways to treat measles and doctors need to know that and to know those methods.’ One problem; there is no treatment for measles. Signed, a doctor who’s been forced to deal with measles because of this stupid fraud.

An increasing theme on Wall Street: Trump may blink on US tariffs, but he’s already broken the “brand”. 🇺🇸 “The world moves on,” Mr. Goldin said. @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/04/28/b...

The COVID vaccines have been taken by billions of people, saved millions of lives, and are some of the most rigorously tested medical products in history. Someone who has zero experience in vaccine development should not be influencing the approval process. This will kill people.

BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

US kids are going to get two dolls, while the president gets 6,600 GI Joes.

Crushing to hear of more junior colleagues in the computer science & human-computer interaction (HCI) space whose NSF CAREER grants were terminated this week. I'm hopeful that philanthropic funders can find a way to support this generation of scientists studying online manipulation, bias in AI, etc.

"GDP growth is going to be 2 - 2-1/2 percent in the first quarter, at least." -- Kevin Hassett [GDP actually declined in the first quarter.]

Do you know how much CEO pay has skyrocketed since 1978? 100%? 500%? Try 1,085% Meanwhile, the $7.25/hr fed. minimum wage hasn't budged in 15 years and the tipped min. wage has been $2.13/hr since 1991. This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

New from 404 Media: Mike Waltz has inadvertently revealed the obscure app the government is using to archive Signal messages. Made by a company called TeleMessage. Use of the Signal clone raises questions about how messages being secured, what classification of info www.404media.co/mike-waltz-a...

Just to be clear, this is a violation of the fundamental ethical principle in clinical trial design called "equipoise." Equipoise means that no-one is exposed to excess risk just to test the therapy. That's specifically *why* vaccine trials don't use placebo arms. Ethical violation as POLICY.

President Trump says he can bring a Marylander home to his family—but won't. Sounds like he has contempt for the law and the court. "Where law ends, tyranny begins."

Judge Rodriguez, a Trump appointee, rules that the administration cannot use the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged members of TdA. It’s a wartime authority & we are not at war, he holds. On to the 5th Circuit & SCOTUS.

DOJ policy expressly prohibits prosecutors from making these kind of statements, following an indictment because everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and this sort of statement is prejudicial. But in the Trump administration, prosecutors can apparently get away with violating the law.

🚨Jasmine Crockett & Eric Swalwell begged House Judiciary Republicans to vote NO. They offered deals, sweeteners, the whole package. And those damn soulless traitors STILL voted to let Trump exile American citizens. This isn’t just betrayal—it’s the birth of authoritarian rule. Sound the alarm.🚨

If only there was a group of trained professionals who could assess disease outbreaks 💩

I’m going to continue reminding folks that this is the kind of thing that warrants impeachment. (Not for nothing but Republicans impeached Mayorkas for just existing)

Good Night World

The Integrated Research Facility “conducts research on the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases that are deemed ‘high consequence’—those that pose significant risks to public health.” Cool, cool, what could go wrong?

Rep Eric Swalwell walked out in *shock*—and who could blame him? Every single GOP member on the House Judiciary Committee just voted to let Trump “deport” American citizens. This is illegal, authoritarian, and unforgivable 🤬 Time to call, write, & protest before the full House votes.

🚨BREAKING: Full Fourth Circuit DENIES Trump admin motion to stay order blocking Musk/DOGE access to personal data at Social Security Admin. Data will remain out of Musk/ DOGE’s hands. A BIG win for @democracyforward.org and its clients! Follow Democracy Docket for details. www.democracydocket.com

NIAID's Integrated Research Facility is one of the few federal facilities charged with studying Ebola. Tuesday afternoon, all of its work was put on indefinite pause by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s department. www.wired.com/story/hhs-ni...

Unhappy to confirm that the entire Historical Advisory Committee at the State Department received termination notices this afternoon (myself included). The HAC, set up by Congress, oversees the office that produces the FRUS series. history.state.gov/about/hac/in... 1/

Every so often I remember that Mitch McConnell, who saw Trump with clarity, could have chosen to end him as a political force, but decided it was someone else's problem. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Here's what I said for this story, which is very much worth your time. Because this flight was stopped, reporters have had the chance to actually dig into the government's claims of gang membership — and they are EXTRAORDINARILY weak.

I could be wrong about this but I really think most Americans do not want to be forced to “do their own research” about food & drug & product safety and would rather that the government agencies that have been sorting that all out for them for decades not be obliterated in the name of “efficiency.”

What an image! Venezuelan men who narrowly avoided being imprisoned by Trump in El Salvador without trial (saved by the Supreme Court) spelled out an SOS to a @reuters.com camera drone observing the Bluebonnet ICE facility. 11 days ago, buses to the airport were turned around at the last second.

We've learned the Trump Administration has ILLEGALLY withheld over $430B in funds approved by Congress — gutting vital services including child care, disaster relief and more. The courts must continue to hold this lawless president accountable, even if spineless congressional Republicans won't.

Trump 2.0: Armed fed'l agents burst in (apparently a no-knock warrant). Since they'd worked the case, they knew who they were looking for. Instead, they found a mom & her 3 girls. Nonetheless, they sent them out into the rain in underwear & then took all their $ as evidence. kfor.com/news/local/w...

“I could … but we have lawyers who don’t want to do that.” This means nothing less than the Trump Administration is in open defiance of the Supreme Court of the United States.

He’s … a pathological liar. Pure and simple.

This exchange is so very telling. Trump repeatedly claims the photoshopped MS-13 on Kilmar Abrego Garcia's knuckles is real, Terry Moran keeps telling him it isn't, prompting Trump to say this: "I never heard of you. I picked you. You’re not being very nice. He had MS-13 tattooed... Just say yes!"

RFK Jr. is ending the federal Narcan distribution program credited with the recent steep decline in overdose deaths. This despite his own past heroin addiction and his own brother dying of a drug overdose in 1984.

Host: You could call and get Abrego Garcia back. Trump: I could Host: But the Supreme Court has ordered you to facilitate his release. Trump: I'm not the one making this decision Host: You're the president!
