I really respected Zelensky for standing up to Putin in 2022, even though it seemed suicidal. So I have to respect him for standing up to Trump in 2025, even though it seems suicidal.

NOAA does weather forecasts, tracks hurricanes, provides maps/data for aviation, shipping & oil exploration, etc … It’s hard to imagine firing its employees won’t cost far more $ than it saves in the long run www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Zack Labe, who not only published climate research but also communicated it thru near-daily graphs, maps & GIFs, is one of those fired from NOAA. I can’t think of many people who demonstrated so clearly that their work was in the public interest.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats. After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

A wise friend sent this to me I'm reminded of the old Turkish proverb: "When the clown enters the castle, the clown does not become king but the castle become a circus."

This was chilling. Grateful for 60 Minutes, its brave guests, Scott Pelley and Lesley Stahl leading interviews on what’s going down at DOJ, FBI and CFPB. Without fear or favor. Please make sure to watch. And share with everyone you know to watch. It matters.

Democratic Leaders Stand Real Still In Hopes No One Notices Them

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source. Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

For those keeping track, Arctic sea-ice extent continues its record daily lows. Meanwhile, Antarctic sea-ice extent is now ranked third lowest for the day -- behind (surprise!) only 2023 and 2024. Put this together and the planet continues to experience record daily lows for global sea-ice extent.

NOAA operates 18 satellites & 1,300 ocean buoys. A private company could maybe launch one or two satellites or a few dozen buoys. That’s a fraction of the picture NOAA provides (to private TV stations, websites & apps) www.wired.com/story/noaas-...

At the conference, AAAS leadership called on scientists to "support" each other in an "unnerving" time. But people were afraid to call the Trump administration what it is: an attack on science. That doesn't bode well for the coming fights. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/c...

Research funding is being cut, scientists are being fired & studies suppressed, @holdenthorp.bsky.social is saying at the #AAAS conference. This harassment “has gotten worse in the last 6-7 years, it’s gotten crazy since November & it’s been absolutely insane in the past 3 weeks”
