Pro tip: if you don’t like being around college students, don’t live in a college town or in a neighborhood near a large university. Complaining about students and advocating for restrictive zoning that punishes students is disingenuous

New interesting data about growth (and lack thereof) in the Wasatch Front from Ken C Gardner at the U of Utah. Salt Lake City keeps leading the pack in population growth, with 4,450 residents between 2023 and 2024.

Running a country (or a city, or state) is not like running a business. A business is not a democracy. Government should be one, with diverse stakeholders. This fundamental difference and the profoundly wrong belief that one can run a country like a business explain today’s Republican Party.

CBO cost estimate of the Senate GOP bill is out! But this is the version where they pretend $3.76 trillion of tax cuts are actually free. When you account for that CBO estimates that their bill will increase deficits by $3.3 trillion over the decade, much more expensive than the House.

Senate Republicans are calling to cut Medicaid and CHIP by over $1 trillion, growing to an 18% cut by 2034. This would be at least four times the size of the largest Medicaid cut in history.

I wish media sometimes ran stories about the problems coming with a lack of public investment or private development. How businesses are affected by decaying infrastructure and declining population rather than growth. Especially in Utah, I see a sensationalist approach describing any change as bad

My older daughter, after trying a Crumbl cupcake: “This tastes too American” (i.e. sweet). Proud Italian dad here

I’ll be praying and fasting for better political leaders

Morning trail run

Allow cities to be cities. Don’t force them to be suburbs

I approve this message

I'm going to try and communicate with my Republican colleagues in a new way.

Good thing the NY Times was so worried about Biden's supposed cognitive decline. Now they'll write extensively about the apparent decline of the current president. Right?!?

what athlete’s expression will stay with you the rest of your life?

When Republican voters learn how much the "Big Beautiful Bill" redistributes from poor to rich, they become much less likely to want to re-elect their incumbent senators...

This is remarkable. New Quinnipiac poll finds support for path to legalization for most undocumented immigrants has risen to 64%. Only 31% want most of them deported. That's a 14 point net swing for legalization since Trump took office. On immigration generally, he's at 41-57!

Some Utahns will literally risk burning down their home and those of their neighbors to light up fireworks. I’ll never understand the insane love for fireworks in this state

“I personally was pretty surprised, actually, at how efficient the government was,” Sahil Lavingia told NPR's Juana Summers.

Why did someone choose to name the object on the right the same as the object on the left? When I first started skiing in the U.S., I was very confused by the presence of gondolas at ski resorts

Careful guys, if you don’t control migration you might turn out like <checks notes> the greatest, wealthiest city in the world.

Leagues of cities and towns around the country saying, "We don't need state housing reforms because cities are taking actions to make housing more affordable."

Tonight I'm texting Nancy Pelosi and asking HER for $5

My challenge to you is to talk about it (more). Talk about climate change. Talk about the importance of the scientific infrastructure in the US. Talk about the implications of these cuts on the economy, our health, public safety, the environment, and what this means for the next generation as well.
