I can't directly quote-post the item I just shared from @ironspike.bsky.social, on the topic of "business" (what characters do during dialogue) in storytelling, but it's the post right before this one in my timeline. But I want stress that it's great advice not just for visual media.

FREE ADVICE: so, there's a filmmaking concept called "business." "Business" is, essentially, the stuff your character does while talking. Fixing a car engine, ice skating, eating an ice cream cone, ducking gunfire. You gotta give your characters "business" so they're not just standing there yappin'.

The first lecture I give my intro to creative writing students is called "Ideas are Bullshit." Ideas are everywhere and hardly matter. They have no inherent quality, "good" or "bad." I love starting with a seemingly-bad idea--it just wows the reader even more when you deliver on it!

This one that viscerally changed the tone of the story, for me. I think A's discomfort with waking up alone becomes more immediately sympathetic. I chose a new take with a less dismissive tone for B's line "I just went to the store. I haven't been gone long," though either option is interesting.
