🚨 🧠 We have a new preprint out where we studied which brain networks are engaged during mental imagery and self-generated thought. We used a precision fMRI approach along with multidimensional experience sampling (mDES) to get trialwise self-reports from each participant about what they imagined.

I am incredibly proud to share my first, first-author paper as a postdoc with @benhayden.bsky.social . How does the human hippocampus, known for encoding concepts, represent the meanings of words while listening to narrative speech? www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

New Preprint 🚨 This research with @bjherrmann.bsky.social, @alexbarnett.bsky.social, and @barense.bsky.social extends previous work exploring how LLMs can simulate human event segmentation, with applications for automated recall assessments. arxiv.org/abs/2502.13349

Still lots of opportunities to get involved organizing for the #StandUpForScience2025 rally across the US on March 7. 📣 Check out @standupforscience.bsky.social for info. Lots to do, colleagues! 👏 Let’s not sit by and watch science be destroyed. There’s always a need for anything you can do. 🔬🩺🧠

Happening tomorrow! Don’t miss it 👀

Excited to share our preprint "Fast-timescale hippocampal processes bridge between slowly unfurling neocortical states during memory search" 🧠✨ We leverage iEEG to elucidate the fast neural mechanisms by which long multimodal narratives are unfurled in continuous memory-search tinyurl.com/wjkr3dvf

Our language neuroscience lab (evlab.mit.edu) is looking for a new lab manager/FT RA to start in the summer. Apply here: tinyurl.com/3r346k66 We'll start reviewing apps in early Mar. (Unfortunately, MIT does not sponsor visas for these positions, but OPT works.)

Mark your calendars 📅 ✍️ for NEW's next webinar! 🕙 Feb 20th, 2025, 10AM-11:30AM EST 🌟 Three speakers sharing their recent work on neuroimaging of epilepsy 🤝 Panel and audience discussion 💻 Happening here: zoom.us/j/95048511341 🗣️ Please spread the word and share!

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! ✨ They’ll never be able to take away the impact and contributions of Black scientists, no matter how hard they try. So each week this month, I’ll be highlighting a few #BlackInNeuro scientists for you to learn about, celebrate their work, & follow 👩🏾‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬

Out in @natureneuro.bsky.social today 🥂 Cytoarchitecture, wiring and signal flow of the human default mode network Combining 3D histology, 7T MRI, and connectomics to explore DMN structure-function associations Led by Casey Paquola, @themindwanders.bsky.social & a terrific team of colleagues 🙏

I want to highlight a special issue in honor of Sarah DuBrow, a brilliant scientist and dear friend who passed away in 2022. We contributed a paper in which we disentangled the importance of temporal and causal relationships while participants recalled the non-linear narrative, Memento. 🧵 ⬇️ 1/9

New preprint (first of my PhD) | Associations between epilepsy-related polygenic risk and brain structure in childhood 🧬🧠⚡️ Elevated PRS for TLE-HS is linked to cortical thinning in healthy children—mirroring atrophy patterns observed in epilepsy case-control studies bit.ly/imaging-gene...

in press 💫 Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Perturbs the Brain‐Wide Excitation‐Inhibition Balance: Associations w/ Microcircuits, Clinical Parameters, and Cognitive Dysfunction ↙️ paper ↙️ advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... multisite & multiscale ↙️ by @kexie.bsky.social & a dream team 💫

we've seen goal gradient like effects emerge in cognitive effort tasks but how does attention to goal progress ? a new study from our lab, by Sean Devine and others, uses eyetracking to answer this question link.springer.com/article/10.3...

The university of arizona psychology department is hiring faculty with a strong interest in teaching to join our outstanding career track teaching unit! Please use this link to apply: arizona.csod.com/ux/ats/caree...

New year, new preprint (+ last thesis paper!) Macroscale gradients of intracranial EEG power spectra follow familiar axes: sensory-motor and unimodal-transmodal 🕵️‍♀️ Gradients show overall stronger association to distance, but multimodal information was best in transmodal areas 🧠 tinyurl.com/ykacndd5

Excited to share this perspective with @yaelniv.bsky.social about how schemas might be learned and instantiated via reinforcement learning, latent cause inference, and dimensionality reduction, and what's the medial prefrontal cortex might be doing for all of these www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New paper in Imaging Neuroscience by Ludwig Sichen Zhao, Jay A. Gottfried, et al: Leveraging multi-echo EPI to enhance BOLD sensitivity in task-based olfactory fMRI doi.org/10.1162/imag...

🍾 Now in press @elife.bsky.social Multimodal correlates of childhood psychopathology co-led by @jroyer.bsky.social , Valeria Kebets, @bttyeo.bsky.social & our many fantastic co-authors 🙏 based on the ABCD dataset 👉 elifesciences.org/articles/87992

Want to level up your data skills before the end of 2024? This is the best intro textbook I've found for R: psyteachr.github.io/ads-v3/ by the brilliant @emilynordmann.bsky.social and @debruine.bsky.social

#Neuroimaging crowd, hear me out! 👀 Did you ever want to add #EyeTracking to your #fMRI study but found it too much hassle? Got existing data you’d love to add eye tracking to? Consider trying out *MR-based eye tracking* (i.e. inferring gaze from eye voxels)! Here is a 🧵 with a few options!👇 1/9

Happy publication day to us! New paper just landed: The holistic forgetting of events and the (sometimes) fragmented forgetting of objects www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #psychscisky #neuroskyence #cognition 🧪

It takes a LONG time to manually score autobiographical memory narratives for internal and external details (in Autobiographical Interview terms). Here, we report a new model that automates this process, matching manual scorers, but much faster (5s instead of 10m per memory). osf.io/preprints/ps...

I want to draw attention to a special issue that Lila Davachi and I put together to memorialize our friend and colleague Sarah DuBrow. It’s full of papers inspired by her work and her being from a group of collaborators, friends, and fans! Thanks @bradpostle.bsky.social for helping make this happen.

New starter pack: people doing science with narratives, naturalistic memory, natural conversations, and using language models for psych/cog sci 📖💻📚 (Reply with 🙋 if you'd like to be added!) go.bsky.app/LGRYMvQ

Want to make beautiful scientific figures? Easy! The NIH released a library of 2000+ free scientific illustrations called *BioArt*. Check it out! bioart.niaid.nih.gov #AcademicSky #PsychSciSky 🧠🟦 🧪

Talk ready for #psynom24 thanks to Selma Lugtmeijer! Come by the Event Cognition session on Sat Nov 23 at 3:30pm to hear about how neural states get longer with age (possibly reflecting a blurring across event boundaries)👀

Super-psyched to share this preprint from my student Yicong (Alan) Zheng: "Recurrent Inhibitory Dynamics in the Entorhinal Cortex Support Pattern Separation" www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... It's a new biologicaly-based computational model of the entorhinal-hippocampal system. Thread (1/?)
