No one even believes that opt-out is intended to work. It is just a convenient fig leaf that allows the thieves to pretend that they care while ignoring everyone’s opt-out requests.

What??? This is pathetic. Come on, UK, you can do better than this! Go respond to this ridiculous UKGOV consultation on AI asap! Just ignore all the fiddly questions in the middle; they're there to discourage you from having your say. www.gov.uk/government/c...

Still hunting for a mature female australian-chinese/australian voice for a 3k word story. Also looking for a male arabic-speaking voice, ideally Egyptian but can be flexible.

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay “They think they want good government and justice for all, Vimes, yet what is it they really crave, deep in their hearts? Only that things go on as normal and tomorrow is pretty much like today.”

But Doctor, I am the great clown Pagliacci.

Welp, since they're pushing Copilot... - Spent this morning organizing LibreOffice Writer to get it the way I like it - Can't find a good Excel replacement yet but 2010 still does everything I need - Covering the rest with Proton Plus I do most of my work in Scrivener anyway. Good riddance.

subtract from the glory of the exploit

I’m not usually a political poster. But god damn, my country is falling apart.

Some people have the Superbowl, we have the Locus Awards! Voting is about to open to YOU, so show some love to your favorite authors and support the world of genre fiction by visiting poll.voting.locusmag... on February 1st!

Earlier this year, I floated the idea of editing a "Quiet Horror" anthology. People seemed to love the idea. Well, it's happening... We open for submissions in the new year. I can't wait to read your stories. More details: matgost.substack.com/p/submission... Please share far and wide!!!

Concept: you become a lighthouse keeper and spooky shit happens. You can team up with either a brilliant local doctor and solve the practical mystery, or the heir of a local witchy shop and solve the paranormal one. Once you've romanced both, you can go polyamorous and get the true ending.

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.bsky.social

I could work on my dissertation, or since I've already sent in my chunk for my supervisor this week, I could spend today working on the eldritch lighthouse horror dating sim I've been fiddling around with in Twine. (Yes, it's gay.)

please just let me finish writing the arson chapter so I can get to the introspective road trip there are only so many ways to describe fire send post

I'm one voice out of millions, I know. But be kind to your American friends today. Last time kids vanished from my classrooms. There may be countries out there that have it worse, but this is serious. My fellow Americans, if you feel like applying for school/grad school abroad to get away 1/2

Authors! Submitting your story to an open call? As someone reading through 400+ submissions for an anthology, some tips: Opening paragraph/sentence: I can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a 'no.' 'Maybes' turn to 'no's' by the end of the first paragraph. Brutal, but it's true.

Good thread. Also, speaking as a former acquiring editor, this post is true: A whole lot of submissions don't make it out of the first paragraph. It's not about the being flashy out of the gate. It's about whether the craft is there. Craft isn't something you can fake (even with "AI," trust me).

I'm definitely a True Plantser as well, through and through. I say that I've got "living outlines"; I write them as a rough first draft, then edit them as I write and get new ideas.

Parents, I beg you: teach your children proper paragraphing.

I should probably not keep my chapstick next to the glue sticks in my desk. We are barreling towards a misunderstanding.
