I've been missing Heidi a lot. Queens of the Stone Age was one of her favorite bands, and several tracks from Songs for the Deaf were part of the normal background of our life together. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf Terry Pratchett - Night Watch

I don't normally write about Magic here, but there are a couple of topics related to the new commander brackets that I wanted to discuss: mass land denial and extra turns. tbf, they are two of my favorite EDH strategies, but I think there are some general principles worth digging into.

Why does everybody forget about Mark Cuban? Dude got rich, publicly said "i got lucky," and bought an NBA team....

I have never been to Las Vegas. I like poker, but other gambling has little appeal to me. I don't drink (any more). Vegas drips with decadence and lascivious energy, a perfect counterpoint to the brutal practicality of Sam Vimes. The Crystal Method - Vegas Terry Pratchett - Night Watch

No music tonight. I was never all that into valentine's day, but it was an excuse to do nice things for Heidi. So tonight, I'm remembering her with one of her favorite movies. I miss you so much.

Corollary: some amount of the bad stuff you feel is from not exercising enough, not getting enough sunlight, etc. Take care of your body. It won't fix everything, but it will remove a cause for things getting worse

And now for something a bit different. White Collar Lies is catchy and depressing. Cocaine Chest Pains made it onto one of my workout playlists, so checking out the rest of the album. Kopek - White Collar Lies Terry Pratchett - The Fifth Elephant

When dance music got heavy. Liam experimented with guitar samples on The Prodigy's previous album, but Fat of the Land is where everything really came together. From the first track, the album is a relentless, heavy whole. The Prodigy - Fat of the Land Terry Pratchett - The Fifth Elephant

Diving into some djent, and finishing small gods. An interesting mix of melody, noise, and dissonance. One often emerging out of the other. Eery, occasionally unsettling. Will have to dig into Vildhjarta's catalog a bit more. Vildhjarta - Måsstaden Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

Brooding, heavy, immaculate. Gojira is on the more accessible end of the metal I listen to, and is generally worth checking out if you enjoy guitars and distortion pedals. Gojira - Magma Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

This one's personal - the hourlies are, in fact, among my best friends. Even if i didn't love their music (which i do), I'd still go to their shows just to hang out. They approach all of the problems of modern life with a frenetic energy that makes you believe things will be alright.

If you get this reference, I'm from Michigan and I'm not sure if I should "sorry" or "you're welcome." Probably both.

Looking to feel something that isn't despair - new (to me) music Wednesday. TesseracT - Altered State Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

I keep hearing people say that aetherdrift is mario kart, but i think it's more rock n' roll racing

Needed something adventurous and familiar at the same time. For me, Coltrane's most well-known album is both a cherished memory and defiant cry that i will not lose hope, even in the darkest hour. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

Rolling stone top 100 devolved into unremarkable pop and country, with a smattering of unremarkable albums in other genres, and I'm not subjecting myself to all that. Tonight: Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

Chill vibes to close the weekend, with two of my favorites. Orbital - In Sides Terry Pratchett - Small Gods

97. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God Given everything, not that surprising that I missed Nick dropping a new album last year. Somehow, it manages to feel both ethereal and earthy. Easily my favorite so far. Also has the best production, nothing that felt out of place. Would recommend.

98. Common snd Pete Rock - The Auditorium, Vol. 1 A praiseful cool hip-hop album. Occasionally, the beats are too ambitious, but overall just a relaxed smooth flow and listen. Can definitely see putting this in my chill mood rotation.

99. Sleater-Kinney - Little Rope Solid composition, feels like an album. Couple of production choices i don't like. Somewhere between indie pop and punk, but with less edge and more maturity. Won't make my regular rotation, but there are certainly times i wouldn't mind it.

100. Pom Pom Squad - Mirror Starts Moving Without Me Thoughts: Most songs feel like middle school collages - pulling from disparate sources without understanding how they will (or won't) work together No sense of continuity - a collection of songs, not an album Meh. Probably won't listen again

Since I'm on the kick anyway, i guess I'm going to try and listen to rolling stone's top 100 albums of 2024 and offer my (limited) thoughts. There are very few artists that can get me to listen past the first track of it doesn't immediately engage me, so we'll see how that goes.
