my default setting is "root for Team USA in all circumstances because I love my country and its people even when I'm mad at our government" but I think I need to toggle that switch when our government is loudly using the sporting event as pro-annexation propaganda

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
