I have some exciting news This is New Modern I hope you’ll join me x @newmodernbooks.bsky.social

Hell of a piece here by @mattcarr.substack.com. substack.com/home/post/p-...

There is a special solidarity with those of us who must work today. I see you, I hear you, and I feel you. We can do this!!!

Initial, rejected album sleeve concept for Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Who needs the Maldives? Cornwall: literally that colour. No filters. (Going in that now.)

I know he was, like, three years old or something when he wrote Careless Whisper. But also: George Michael was 23 when he released A Different Corner. Twenty-three. What an extraordinary man.

Lot of old white men in high places whose necks I'd like to break today.

I saw Scala!!!, a thrillingly hilarious documentary about the wild story of London's Scala cinema, and loved it so much that I had to write my own love letter to my own much-missed offbeat arthouse cultural and spiritual home... timworthington.org/2024/01/08/t...

Not really feeling this "Happy Easter" re-rebrand.

Extraordinary, isn't it. I've crystal clarity, as possibly have you, of the morning of 9/11. And just 24 years later, the US is one of the world's biggest terrorist gangs.

#NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek starts today. To mark it, here's an article by me on some recommended reading for Neurowonkies, plus those who think they may be, and those who care about us. (First time I've publicly outed myself in print, too.) #Neurodiversity influenceonline.co.uk/2025/03/14/b...

You know, I think knitting, reading, and even the joy of sweeping up, are quite unfairly demonised in the song 'Cabaret.'

Speeding my tits off on Dexamphetamines in acting class. Thought I was being quite subtle about it, but the very first student I bumped into said, "Ali, mate? Are you speeding your tits off?"

Fuck me, when the right dosage of ADHD meds (Mod drugs, basically - pure speed) finally kick in, they *kick in.* Huge leap between 50mg and 60mg. Feel like I've gone from a hapless Phil Daniels, throwing his scooter off a cliff, to the sharpest Ace Face overnight. (Not Sting.)

Part of the Intro I wrote for my book Kindness: A User's Guide (Bonnier, 2021). Still stand by every word. Still proud of these words. Still relevant.

A counterweight to the culture war's hijacking of neurodivergency as yet more trendy, fad behaviour: if adult ADHD (diagnosed at 3% in the UK) really was just a case of "Oh, I'm having a vaguebook moment", I'm pretty sure I wouldn't feel like paying this amount a month for meds as I currently am.

Speaking as someone who was massively bullied as a kid (yeah, we do end up as the world's creatives), I'm finding this Zelensky capitulation incredibly triggering. The bullies won. One day soon, they'll be dead. That's all I've got.

In my childhood street, Lots Road. Photos by the celebrated, phenomenally talented painter, Henrietta Graham. Black cat by serendipity.

Huge congrats to Anora's Sean Baker for his multiple historic Oscar wins inc Best Director. He's also an incredibly generous guy (not a given in this biz). Last year, the Palme D'or winner went out of his way to email us. I can't tell you how much this means, especially to two indie debut directors.

Could he not get a KFC bone stuck, fatally, in his throat while a security detail / Vance looks the other way, pretending not to hear the desperate sounds of choking and witness the desperate, futile clawing of the air.

I'm still mystified how he isn't actually dead yet, given his diet. We can only hope that one last mouthful of Shitburger stops his withered black heart from beating.

Washington is a terrorist state.

America, you chose that. Proud of yourselves?

Currently at the hairdressers, and we've both completely abandoned the process to stare in utter horror at the live feed of Trump and Zelensky.

This is pure David Lynch, isn't it. Dumbo, the Elephant Man.

Wonder how Piers feels about this now. And 'walking emetic' is a perfect description. 2-0 to Ali.

Happy eighth birthday to this.

Happy eighth birthday to this.

My biological father is a political dissident, who fled a war-torn country. If he ever returns, even now, they'll kill him. As a former lifelong Labour voter, I find this keepyuppy with Reform utterly sickening. Especially from a leader with all the backbone of a sodden toilet roll. A terrible week.

Politically homeless again. Trying to explain this without sounding performative is probably impossible. But here we are. Just sad.

Will you wub me? Can I be your Vallytime?

A Valentine's Day poem by me. Illustration by Harry Donohoe.

Young John the Baptist (2025) Little Harry Pickles stars as Johnny Baptist Junior in this religiopolitical farce. When John-Bap attempts to show Elon Musk (Rami Malek) and Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) the error of their ways, they decapitate him and stick his head on a plate.

Called my GP earlier today...

1/ My brilliant friend @jnraeside.bsky.social has written a brilliant novel about the darker side of stand-up - her hugely acclaimed debut, and the first, we sincerely hope, of many. Powerful, wryly funny, and as close to the reality as it gets without actually incurring law suits...

I wish I could unsee this, but especially the fact it looks as though they've beheaded a child and stuck his head on a plate, John the Baptist-style.

1/ I've always wondered how I'd behave if I were ever mugged / accosted, as an adult, on my own street. And now I know. Walking up the road a few minutes ago, a wannabe gangsta leered and blocked my way with his arm...

Good God!! Look which other bit of our innocence was nearly destroyed!

BRIGHTON, I AM IN YOU!! Collecting a lovely second-hand Roland stage piano (plus stand, carry case and pedal thrown in for free - worra bargain!) from an eBay seller. Was so stoked about touring the movie in Cornwall yesterday, I thought I'd continue the South coast adventure. Good for the soul.

Yesterday, Jane Giles & I were invited to @exeter.ac.uk for a screening & Q&A of our movie SCALA!!!, brilliantly hosted by @kermodemovie.bsky.social & @lindaruthwilliams.bsky.social. We were hugely impressed by the questions from our young audience of Film students, too. Next stop: Newlyn Filmhouse.
