My personal Uktaine shelf is relatively bare at the moment, but does have Rory's book on it. I am looking forward to following this podcast and discovering new books. #Ukraine @uclssees.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzFu...

Yesterday was a London day, specifically meeting a dear friend and visiting the Tate Britain 1980s exhibition - in practice a long 1980s from 1976 to 1993. So much to enjoy but the exhibition was sprawling and unfocused and I was feeling the overload by the end. But do visit. It's on until 5th May

I wrote a thing about Polish cars. Were they really that bad? open.substack.com/pub/alicebat...

Back in Bloomsbury for a talk at @UCLSSEES so a long overdue visit to the wonderful Pizza Sophia is on the agenda

Apparently they want to secure the long term future of the university without asking the fundamental question. "What is a university for?" The accelerating decline of modern languages is the cultural impoverishment of our country

Really looking forward to this

A few reflections on the ideological implications of medieval architecture and the rewriting of history in areas that have changed hands following border changes. open.substack.com/pub/alicebat...

Ryszard Kaczorowski has a humble skwer in Zakopane. Needless to say, Lech Kaczyński has a rather bigger park.

A critique of Samantha Harvey's Orbital & its problematic politics by Tetiana Mykytenko. The point on historical experience is key: western societies & the intellectuals they produce aren't equipped for certain topics, yet won't listen to those who are (in UA/PL): www.dwutygodnik.com/artykul/1164...

Sir Keith Thomas is 92 today. I guess I was not the only history undergraduate to have their horizons massively widened by his work, and particularly Religion and the Decline of Magic. Happy Birthday!

Good news for iron lung manufacturers.....I had the OPV back in the day but understand that a different vaccine is now used where polio is not endemic and that this vaccine is both effective and completely safe. This is mad if true!

My Christmas reading has landed

There comes a point when regimes are so rotten that no one wants to die for them anymore. This happened to Saddam Hussein too. It will also happen one day to Vladimir Putin www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2024/de...

Dear Ally, welcome to Blue Sky. Congratulations on your PhD and I am so sorry you have had to suffer that horrendous abuse. I guess being a woman and clever is unforgivable for a certain type of male. Hopefully you will find this a better place. @allylouks.bsky.social

I have to admit that, just two years ago, I was unfamiliar with either Kobylianska or Ukrainka. Discovering them with @dovzhyk.bsky.social was a high point of my time at @uclssees.bsky.social

So Andrea Jenkyns has joined Reform. A lose lose scenario if ever there was one.

A post, a difficult one to write, about two German women who died on the guillotine in different German states, and what links them. And what we can learn from them. open.substack.com/pub/alicebat...

An informative lecture followed by interesting and wide ranging discussion. Quite a few empty seats at an event I thought was fully booked?

I started as SSEES as a 59 year old mature student. My tome was both enjoyable and stimulating. Too late to be life changing? It's never too late for anything.
