“The way Paul lived and died must be a catalyst for change” www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... #SUValliance #SafeStreetsNow

45 minutes of perfect radio. Listen to the end for truth-bombs on this political moment. “The work won’t change because greed, capitalism, racism: those things have never gone away”. #TheasterGates @thisculturallife.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Another reason to create safe streets, not keep training children in “road safety”. It hasn’t worked. @playingout.bsky.social

My office for the day, thinking about children and streets. Thank you @wshed.bsky.social ❤️ Bristol

Sick of car adverts that use nostalgia of childhood freedom to sell the vehicles that have stolen children’s freedom? This from @thewaroncars.bsky.social is the antidote! 👏👏👏 @playingout.bsky.social youtu.be/_0MVCyOjvtk

a new approach.

In many ways it's fitting that the showdown between monarchy and democracy ends up being over NYC congestion pricing. Cities are where the power of kings were first challenged, and few things are more fundamental to government than control of public space. The cameras are staying on!

I love a bit of undesignated urban space. So many possibilities for people and play, sitting and moving. But undesignated & *unprotected* space just becomes car space. Deploy bollards! @worldbollardassoc.bsky.social

This happened to my little boy on Tuesday evening. Please sign and share to pressure Newham Council to make the streets safer for everyone, especially children.

So Ayr in Scotland wins the prize for most Victorian reason children aren’t playing in the Street. 🐀🐀🐀@playingout.bsky.social

Whilst parks are great, we have long argued for the importance of communal/shared *doorstep* space for children's everyday play - space which tends to be more 'grey' than 'green'. Great to now have this summary of the evidence from @alisonstenning.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

As someone who spends their life fighting for children’s fundamental right to play, talk of adults “needing” to play has always given me the ick. We (adults) have stopped children playing in so many ways and now WE want to play? Wtf?? But… 1/3 www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

“Young people playing football have been…seen as a threat to the social order”. Great paper on how the beautiful game has been pushed out of doorstep space & why we need to return it! #YesBallGames @playingout.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Not making this up but realise a photo would have been good! Trade van parked across the dropped kerb on our busy high street. I tried unsuccessfully to find owner but then 2 seconds later a blind person crossed the road straight into it. Deep breaths.

100%. And what will enable this is safer, less car dominated streets.

Some good news!! Fingers crossed this will be spent well and make local streets that bit safer for children to get out and about. @chrisboardman.bsky.social @sustrans.bsky.social @livingstreets.bsky.social www.gov.uk/government/n...

Free webinar: How can we create a more child-friendly built environment? Thursday 13th Feb 10-12. Should be good! @timrgill.bsky.social @thetcpa.bsky.social www.tcpa.org.uk/event/child-...

We have to be so careful with the way we talk about girls and play - girls face a barrage of stereotypes from the moment they can walk (and before! with tedious pink baby grows!) - we need MORE football and skate parks and we need to be looking at how to help girls take up space on them.

It's almost unbelievable that girls playing sports are (still) facing this kind of crap: “A coach who stopped the game didn’t just question their gender; he accused them of playing in a boyish manner.”

Crazy that girls today are still (or again) having to battle such sexism and stereotyping. In similar vein, can we also recognise that many girls want to play sport/skateboard etc and not just have “places to sit”?! www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/2491486...

Activist and film-maker Sarah Chaundler of #SafeStreetsNow & @betterstreetsforbirmingham.org is making a short, hard-hitting film about the devastating impact of road danger in her city. Does anyone know of any UK film festivals or outlets that might be interested in something like this?

“…the new criteria would prioritize suburban highway projects, rather than urban public transit — a positive for families, since many find raising children in cities to be difficult”. Er…maybe if city streets were safe to walk and cycle, it wouldn’t be so difficult? 🧐 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/u...

A car went through a red light at every single pedestrian crossing I used yesterday. Please do not cross until every vehicle has stopped. Speaking as someone who was run over twice on pedestrian crossings as a kid.
