Hello. I am starting a Substack called Small Finds, for short pieces of non-fiction. If you'd like to read more about it, and perhaps subscribe so that I can share my work with you, please do follow the link. It's free. open.substack.com/pub/smallfin...

I've just passed 30,000 words on my research leave writing project! I always find 20K to be a threshold of doom whereby if I can't get past it after a few weeks, I never will - so it feels good to have kicked it in the shin.

I highly recommend this book by @alicevernon10.bsky.social. A deeply personal examination of parasomnias - sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, lucid dreams etc - and how they've reflected and shaped our art and culture. As a fairly frequent lucid dreamer, it was a real eye-opener (no pun intended).

Week 1 of research leave was an absolute treat. I spent it down in London doing some research, seeing some cool book people, and generally having a bit of a wellbeing break. This week is for typing up the notes I made in the British Library and making progress with writing!

Our Bloomsbury Book Series "Spectres, Hauntings & Horrors" is run in association with the Hauntology & Spectality Research Group based at @yorkstjohn.bsky.social. Find out more about the group's research, or sign-up yourself, here: blog.yorksj.ac.uk/hauntology/ #Hauntings #FolkHorror

My automatic replies are on, and my first ever semester of research leave has begun! My plans are to write a fun fiction project I've been thinking about for a little while, continue researching spooky things, and start to put some plans in place for the publication of GHOSTED in September.

Some excellent nonfiction recommendations here, as well as a fantastic and thoughtful review of Night Terrors.

I had the most ridiculous night - I hallucinated *twice* that a woman's disembodied head, mouth open, was lunging through the darkness to bite me. Then later I woke myself up giggling like a lunatic. Still got it! 😂

I am very much in the [reptile noises] stage of marking.

2025 is going to be a very fun year - Book 2 is happening! I'm extremely excited to announce that my new non-fiction book, Ghosted: A Social History of Ghost Hunting, and Why We Keep Looking, will be published by Bloomsbury in September. 😀👻 www.bloomsbury.com/uk/ghosted-9...

Throwback to last year when I joked to a colleague that the Elf on the Shelf was like a poltergeist...and then it became a main news item on The Guardian. 😂 Merry Christmas, all! www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

I am home for Christmas, but my plan to make my parents watch Godzilla Minus One and have their minds blown has yet to produce results. I will persist. Annoyingly. 🦖

The bedroom as the site of terror. Sweet dreams, everyone! *This is from a piece by @alicevernon10.bsky.social, published in our Yuletide Hauntings 2023.

Happy adoption day to Mr Tiberius "Tibbs" Vernon, part-time cartoon character, full-time scamp. Two years of absolute chaos!

Aberystwyth in the chilly sunshine this afternoon.

We're hiring an Agency Assistant! 🚨 Further details about the role and how to apply can be found here: watsonlittle.com/about/careers/ #publishingjobs #publishinghopefuls

I accidentally made two Christmas cakes this year. I'm concerned my parents will expect two Christmas cakes as a minimum from now on.

Check out this call for volunteers 👇 @richamm.bsky.social makes really cool free online zines and if you would like to be part of one around #Horror and #Disability give him a shout! Articles are v. short and for a general audience - so perfect for any possible first time writers and fans. 😁

Malevolent spectres, incarnations of otherworldly energies, or supernatural companions. Editor @mjpcuervo.bsky.social assembles a party of uncanny on-screen children for the new issue of Yuletide Hauntings. 👉🏼Pre-order on helleborezine.bigcartel.com/products

I, too, conclude every evening with a Screaming Extravaganza.

I went on my first proper ghost hunt at the weekend. I can definitely understand the appeal, not least because it felt acceptable to eat doughnuts at midnight. It was fun!

I am officially half-way through writing the first draft of my next book. I also had terrible sleep paralysis and a nightmare about a poltergeist last week. These things are related. 👻

It would be interesting to see how this compares to parasomnias. In terms of the hours I spend asleep (and by the standards of this article) I'm completely fine, but the things I see and experience in my sleep can mess me right up for days afterwards. www.theguardian.com/science/2024...

Pals! I am talking about spooky sleepy things on Free Thinking on BBC Radio 3 tonight at 10pm (but maybe don't listen right before you go to bed). Catch up here after the broadcast: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

My contributor copy of Shirley Jackson's Dark Tales: Reconsidering the Short Fiction has arrived! I was so happy to be able to write a chapter for this, and to work with fantastic editors Dr Joan Passey and Dr Rob Lloyd.

Laughing at this excellent graph depicting belief in Satan and demons. That's the kind of maths I can get behind. (From Bader, Baker and Carson's 'Paranormal America')

Remember when I joked about writing an article for the university about poltergeists and the Elf on the Shelf? Turns out The Guardian thought it was great idea FOR A MAIN NEWS ITEM. Absolutely hilarious. I have peaked as an academic. t.co/naBrAg6Bwf

My TEDxAberystwyth talk from last December is now on YouTube, and has had 17K views in 15 hours(!!!). That's absolutely bonkers. You can watch it here if you fancy: youtu.be/ZuPvkoDiSr0?...

My friend in the university communications team has asked me to write a Christmas-themed article relating to my research. I could be sensible and write about Christmas ghost story traditions, but I am not sensible and therefore am writing about how the elf on the shelf is just a gangly poltergeist.
