This evening's sunset walk (Plum Island Beach)

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

In case you live in a red state and feel like your voice doesn't matter--it does. Keep the pressure on.

This morning's sunrise

Scientists, #HPS scholars & experts help protect NOAA: Join me in signing this open letter calling on Congress & the Trump admin to ensure that NOAA & its sub-agencies remain fully funded & staffed, & that the independent, trusted science the agency produces is protected act.ucsusa.org/4kajJuk 🧪 ⚒️

"just as the general public can’t enter the kitchen or the manager’s office, neither can ICE without a judicial warrant giving them explicit permission. “You should consider placing signage indicating certain areas as ‘private’ to distinguish them from public areas in advance of any ICE raid,”

I will be very interested to see what organizations that have already scrubbed/removed DEI content (National Academies, American Society of Microbiology -- see my stories) will do if these orders are deemed to be illegal and violate constitutional rights. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

Penn now also cutting grad admissions, joining many other great universities like Pitt & BU. My heart goes out to all those senior undergrads & other applicants who had hoped to go to grad school next year. Oof. #PhDSky

This administration is executing layoffs and threatening funding cuts that could lead to TCU closures. TCUs are part of the Federal Govt's treaty obligations. Join our phone banking community for more information on how we can push our reps on this issue and others. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Welcome to affirmative action for white male mediocrity, which has a long, long history but is all ramped up and shouty and sulky right now.

Tonight's sunset walk

🎉 This is the best news in a month!! Hold the line, America.

"The White House has made clear speech in favor of DEIA are viewpoints the government wishes to punish & extinguish. & as the Supreme Court has made clear time & time again, the government cannot rely on the threat of invoking legal sanctions & other means of coercion to suppress disfavored speech"

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

Everyday, I learn new words.

And now discriminatory censorship (& anti-environmental justice) for National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) too... #philsky

Happy Birthday to the inspiring John Lewis born (February 21st, 1940) #OTD #GoodTrouble

Update: The White House is already backing down on this. Keep calling your reps. Keep pressuring them. Along with your reps, the white house phone number is (202) 456-1111. Use 5calls.org to get all your reps in one place along with a guide. www.nysun.com/article/whit...

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

At a hearing in Boston Friday, a federal judge extended a temporary block of the Trump administration’s drastic cuts in medical research funding that many scientists say will endanger patients and delay new lifesaving discoveries.

Keep up the pressure & celebrate the wins big or small

@jeffsebo.bsky.social @birchlse.bsky.social and I put a lot of philosophy into our new Science Perspective on animal consciousness. Mill's analogical argument + inference to the best explanation + careful experiments = justification for consciousness in many animals. Where might it end?

There is a PSA Author meets Critics session today from 12:30p - 2:10p at the APA Central. The discussion centers around The Land Is Our Community - Aldo Leopold’s Environmental Ethic for the New Millennium by Roberta Millstein with comments from Jay Odenbaugh, Katherine Morrow, & Antoine Dussault!

Looking forward to this today! It will be live-streamed on the Center’s YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/@ucla-c1718cs

If a president were to openly disobey a court decision, it could be an impeachable offense, but it would be up to Congress to act—& up to the people to demand that it does...we make the government.... if we don’t resist or speak up in our organizations, in our towns, then we’ve conceded"

I wrote this for me, and also maybe for you? I hope it helps: 🧪 www.scientificamerican.com/article/feel...

Science (and science policy, and conservation) friends, I need your help! We are collecting *specific, clear* examples of harms caused by the Trump administration's attacks on science, to be included in an open letter. Can be links to news stories/social media posts. 🧪🦑🌎 #SciComm #SciPol

Morning - Rise up & resist! Today, let's focus on what we can control. Remembering that our purpose fuels our resilience & resistance. They want us to be fearful; worrying about the future. Bc in fear, we're not living in the moment. We're unable to help now when we're spiraling. #tgif

The City of Boston is leading 40+ mayors, cities, and counties in an amicus brief against the Trump Administration's drastic and illegal cuts to federal research funding—cuts that will lead to immediate job losses nationwide.

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻
