Good & scary empty wheel thread

WATCH: “MCCARTHYISM ON STEROIDS.” Senator @edmarkey sounds the alarm about Trump grabbing people who are here legally and shipping them to prisons with no charges, simply for writing op-Eds or protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza — and says everyone should be standing up against it.

Oh, my heart!💔 Get this poor bird to a rehab!

Marriott’s CEO said it straight: “We welcome all… we create opportunities for all… that’s who we are as a company.” He went back to his hotel to find 40K emails from Marriott associates worldwide saying “thank you.” Plenty of CEOs talk. Capuano showed up. Marriott still has my business.

Breaking Reuters:   The Trump admin moved a Venezuelan man who had worked in construction in Philadelphia to Texas for possible deportation *after* a federal judge had issued an order blocking his removal from Pennsylvania or the U.S., according to court records. www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

I wrote about some details that the Trump administration might not want to come to light when it comes to what kind of deal Trump has truck with Bukele asharangappa.substack.com/p/whats-the-...

In Orwell's 1984, when the regime changed course, its propagandists rewrote history to pretend nothing had changed. Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia. And that's what's happening in the United States now, as Trump's propagandists lie about his trade war. This short video exposes the lies.

Stay loud stay visible stay brave

🎵 🔥 MEMPHIS VS. MUSK — a banger from @protectouraquifer on protecting the Memphis water supply (especially from Musk’s supercomputer) Original post: www.instagram.com/reel/DIwOBCX...

Van Hollen: "This case is not only about one man, as important as that is. It is about protecting fundamental freedoms and the fundamental principle in the Constitution for due process that protects everyone who resides in America."

it's important this go as viral as the original story for morale purposes if nothing else. despite the image they project these people are NOT unaccountable. consequences CAN be forced. focused anger and outrage MATTERS.

Not to state the obvious, but none of them were sent to a terrorist prison in El Salvador. They all had lawyers, indictment by grand jury, a trial or a guilty plea where a judge ensured it was knowing & voluntary & access to an appeals process. In other words, all the hallmarks of due process.

This framing is disingenuous. The government became dependent on universities to produce science, social science & technology. This was never a charity relationship. Government invest in what is useful to it. It’s not mysterious & govt has frankly gotten a good deal.

This post and the repost - the whole thing!

No, it won't happen "overnight," but it is starting. People are rising up

They can do both and still have the high ground to point out Bobby Kennedy is trying to kill us.

A thread - a scary, but informative, thread

Watch this whole exchange. It neatly captures the absurdity of where we are on this case (and not just because it cites our reporting, I swear!)

Looks good! (Reposting to remember)

Ed Martin’s appearances on Russian state television should end his nomination to be a U.S. attorney. www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

The DC attorney nominee has appeared dozens of times on Russian state media www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

"There is little precedent for the situation we find ourselves in, and obsessively trying to relitigate and rewin 2024, or 2016, is pointless and dangerous. Democrats need to fight for democracy; they need to fight Trump. The alternative is not an election loss. The alternative is fascism"

!!! The NC Board of Elections reveals that EVEN IF it throws out all the votes contested by Jefferson Griffin and the state Supreme Court, Justice Allison Riggs is STILL on track to narrowly win the race. HUGE news from @bryanranderson.bsky.social: andersonalerts.substack.com/p/riggs-supr...

This is what I was talking about before - the WH has been letting in more softball MAGA reporters who just want to help them advance their message. And it no longer publishes transcripts so to see how lazy and easy the Qs are you need to strap in and watch.

I agree. Slo-mo, ongoing, with an administration engaged in frog-boiling

Adding to @daveweigel.bsky.social that I like @crow.house.gov but Congressman I'd suggest that the Q isn't, "should we talk about issues like 'insider trading' and 'Signalgate' in those precise phrases," it's whether Ds will stand as a party against rampant lawlessness & world historical corruption

Insider trading.

Wheeeeee!

they could call everyone back to Washington and impeach him before the markets open just saying

Given Trump’s flagrant lawlessness, in a sane country we would’ve been talking about impeachment and removal weeks ago.

Again!

A win!

Very odd and questionably lawful prior restraint order out of Texas. The honor society Phi Theta Kappa is trying to prevent a critic named Toni Market from publishing a free book. They just got this bizarre order from a Texas judge prior-restraining it. /1 www.andthenshespokeup.com/wp-content/u...

CARTOON OF THE DAY (From @BillBramhall @NYDailyNews )

Trump’s suggestion that he could run for a third term—and Republican’s tacit openness to the prospect despite its clear unconstitutionality—is a low-key admission they don’t know how to put together a winning coalition without him directly in the ballot. See also: Wisconsin.

"First they came for..." Please share #laloalcaraz cartoons

In his 1957 filibuster, Strom Thurmond said "Negroes ... are not so well qualified to vote as are the white people.” A Black senator just broke the record Thurmond set with that speech. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/cory-bo...

Sending a Russian dissent back to Russia to be tortured and/or killed perfectly encapsulates this loathsome administration’s lack of American values.

This is the op-ed Rumeysa Ozturk co-wrote in 2024 criticizing the Tufts administration’s response to student demands for action regarding Gaza and Israel. It is unquestionably speech protected by the First Amendment. /1 www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024...

Whoever has JD in their phone as VP better change it before they ‘accidentally’ add Putin to their next war plan chat. Incompetent clown show.

If you're scooping up students off the street for writing op-eds, you're secret police, and should be treated accordingly.

At some point normal people are going to notice that Trump is disassembling the federal government, right?

This whole thread, in the context of rationalism and the tech world (an extreme example being the Zizians omny.fm/shows/behind... and www.wired.com/story/deliri...), is very alarming.
