Unsolicited writing advice, no. 246: No one but you are responsible for what you write. Not your editor, not your readers, not your publicist. Your choices - including the decision to take advice - are yours, and yours alone. This is both a freedom, and a responsibility.

sorry, i’ve got to cancel our plans this evening. i’m encumbered again. no i will not drop any of my items

Found this screenshot of a conversation we had a few years back. Never a dull moment in this household!

Remarkable. Missed the mark in every single way possible. Not a voice actor, don’t speak a word of Mandarin or Cantonese, and if given the chance, would 100% sabotage your large language model and laugh about it with my friends.

Because I’m a complete nerd. (Yes, I already had the online version. I like books, ok?) #chicagomanualofstyle #editor #freelanceeditor #copyeditor #writersofinstagram

Sometimes I half-convince myself I’m a perfectly normal, capable adult. And then I have to make a phone call to book a couple of medical appointments and all of a sudden I’m shaking like mad and I’m repeating the sentence I’m going to say over and over in my head while staring out the window. 1/2

I like my potatoes undercooked.

I just saw someone refer to a real gay couple as “yaoi” and I’m pretty sure this is why we can’t have nice things.

Explaining to my husband why I feel more comfortable when there’s more people at the gym than when it’s just me and someone else. Me: “It’s okay at yoga because nobody expects you to talk at yoga.” Him: “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die.”

Singin’ in the Rain (1952) / The Artist (2011)

So basically I’m an awkward nerd. Gotcha.

Couple things. How the author chooses to describe (or not) the setting informs the reader of tone, backstory, even character development. It's not just there to make the word count. 1/

Yo, #Halifax. Why is there construction work happening outside at 3:30 in the morning? Some people are trying to sleep over here.

I had to dig pretty deep in old, dusty, somewhat repressed memories, but I found it. This is the story of a boy named Louis—a puppeteer—who comes to a village to show off his beautiful blue bird. He wants to make the bird fly, but a puppet can’t fly. A puppet doesn’t have life. 1/3

Listen, Word. If I was done typing in this comment box, I would have clicked somewhere else. Did I click somewhere else? No? Then let me keep typing in the comment box!

Word nerds assemble! It's the new CMOS Q&A!

Sid:

For fuck's sake, Walmart. You can't substitute a zero sugar soda for its regular version. That is not equivalent. This isn't "oooh, I'm watching my weight so I'll get the diet version today". This is "diabetic person receives a drink they're going to have to pour down the sink if they want to live".

Loving this blast from the past! ❤️ Hit me right in the childhood.

Having watched a YouTuber play the beginning of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, I can say it’s not landing for me emotionally. I liked the premise, but found the execution lacking. The characters (so far) feel generic, and the big tragic emotional moments of the intro just don’t feel quite…earned?

Why would I say Mrs. Doubtfire when Hook is right there.
