Despite everything, I still really want to celebrate the wonderful folks in my group, so I hope it is ok if i write about our latest work. I am very proud of all the authors, and our collaborators, on our work just published in Nature communications. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Happy 37th birthday to @relenski.bsky.social long term evolution experiment. Here's a beautiful summary: the-ltee.org/history/

In light of policies to defund biomedical research, and with judicial hearings happening today, we hope to highlight the many ways biomedical research improves people's lives, and to convey how damaging the proposed cuts would be... not just for us researchers, but for everyone.

Here is a brief thread on this preprint from @virusesimmunity.bsky.social's group studying a volunteer cohort of people with self-reported "post-vaccination syndrome", recently covered in the NYT. I think there are a few reasons to be skeptical of the headline takeaways of this preprint.

To my colleagues, friends, and everybody else in the federal workforce, including from the NIH and the CDC, you are all heroes and deserve so much better than the obtuse insanity you’re all living through at the moment. Rest assured that we are with you in this fight and unafraid 💪!

First BlueSky post + a breath of fresh air! Excited about our preprint on the packaging + structure of viral RNA segments in influenza virions: doi.org/10.1101/2025.... A saga from amazing Christof and Qing, and a great collaboration with @nicolerobb.bsky.social and @efodor.bsky.social.

Speak up!!! Please email & call you Congress Reps today to oppose these cuts to NIH-especially if you are a scientist living in a red state. Here’s where to find them: www.congress.gov/members/find...

Happy to be part of this beautiful work using DNA-PAINT to study genome packaging in influenza 😊thanks to all co-authors @efodor.bsky.social & Christof, Achilles and Qing! Check it out here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

In a new study led by Caelan Radford, we use deep mutational scanning to systematically compare the escape mutations from two broadly neutralizing antibodies in a clade A versus clade B HIV Envelope. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Our study on pasteurising influenza viruses in milk is now out! It's a nice simple story: influenza viruses (including H5N1) are killed really effectively by pasteurisation, but in raw milk they stay infectious - obvious public health implications of both points... (1/2) rdcu.be/d73te

🚨 Postdoc Opportunity Alert 🚨 Are you passionate about advancing our understanding of mucosal immunity to respiratory viruses like coronaviruses and influenza? Join our team to conduct cutting-edge research! 🧫🧬 📍 Location: Hamilton, Montana, USA www.training.nih.gov/jobs/pdirta-...! 🧪✨

Excited to share this new preprint showing that non-canonical influenza virus transcripts are produced in a sequence/RNA structure-dependent manner on aberrant RNAs: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Just in time for the holidays, our lab has just submitted our first lab led paper www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...! We use phylodynamics to reconstruct how H5N1 got to North America and spread so rapidly. Full thread coming post holidays, but for now, super proud of @lambod50.bsky.social

Our work on cellular RNA interactions with MAVS that promote antiviral signaling is finally live. So grateful to our indispensable collaborators as well as reviewers who helped to strengthen our work. #RNA #innateimmunity #virology @ramlabuw.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Excited for my first bluesky post announcing TWO openings for tenure track positions in virology! I am chair of the search committee and with a new department head Mike Gale we are in an exciting building phase. Please share with anyone who might be interested: hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/ext/365...

We turned the Bacteroides fragilis pangenome from @reneeoles.bsky.social & @marvicct.bsky.social's recent preprint into a (temporary) tattoo! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 🎨🦠 #Pangenome #ScienceTattoo

The Department of Pathology at UC San Diego is hiring a new Department Chair! We are comprised of basic, translational, and physician scientists working on cancer, neurological disease, microbial infection, and inflammatory disease. Please share & repost! 🧪 apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF03983

Exciting times! Our latest preprint is now live 🤩! After nearly 16 yrs of running my lab, I truly believe this is one of the most significant contributions we've made. It offers fresh hypotheses about how pandemic Vibrio cholerae spreads globally. Let’s dive in!🧵..1/n www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Let it FLOW with GGPLOT🤩 While flowjo is great for analysing flow data and gating, visualisation is sometimes frustrating. Using #ggcyto and #CytoML it is super easy to visualise your flow data beautifully with ggplot! #flow #ggplot2 #immunosky #bloodsky www.dorienpastoors.com/data-visuali...

Rachel Van Gelder, a recently minted PhD from the lab, shows IL-2 splices IFNG mRNA introns, increasing protein levels via NF-κB signaling. She uncovers a novel role for cytokine-induced splicing in immunity! 🧬 #RNA #Immunology #Research www.embopress.org/doi/full/10....

In our most recent work, Kevin Groen from the lab made AIR cells for rapid & sensitive functional detection of interferon types I, II & III. AIR cells can be used with a live cell luciferase substrate, are highly sensitive & can detect autoantibodies neutralising interferons. doi.org/10.1002/eji....

Katherine is an amazing scientist! I would definitely consider joining her lab if you are in the market!

Last week, a teenager in British Columbia contracted H5N1, the first human case acquired in Canada. The BC CDC and and Canadian Food Inspection Agency have released sequences from this infected person and domestic and wild birds sampled in BC, which we've just added to Nextstrain. A thread:

New preprint led by Jessica Burnier in the lab of @jwveening.bsky.social provides strikingly novel and deep mechanistic insights into the mysterious S proteins: “A bacterial cell wall repair and modification system to resist host antibacterial factors” www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
