An Opinion piece in response to the latest Clarivate announcement from @siobhanh.bsky.social (normally members only) - dub.sh/f9uF75E

"this development emphasises the need to increase bibliodiversity in the market & our collections. Actions such as investing in open monographs & open educational resources (& open more generally) as well as titles from smaller presses, can foster a more diverse & resilient information ecosystem."

Thanks Kevin! Worth reiterating that subscribing to megaplatforms for access cannot end well: they can yank books when they want & hike prices when they want and there is *nothing you can do about it* because your reading lists etc are locked in. Investing in OA books instead makes much more sense.

'Libraries play a pivotal role in this ecosystem through their investments, but also by leveraging the tools and services offered by OAPEN and DOAB to enhance their collections, support researchers, and engage with the broader OA community.' #OAbooks @nielsstern.bsky.social @doabooks.bsky.social

"You'll never own it but you'll keep paying for it" = Subscription to closed-access ebooks in a nutshell.

UPDATE: We've added Information Power's guide to support smaller/specialist #publishers transition to #OA to our upcoming Copim Compass information hub 🧭 The Compass will help you navigate the waters of OA book publishing - keep a lookout! 👀 🔗 https://buff.ly/4jPhpsx #OpenAccess #OAbooks

We join with publishers, authors, booksellers & librarians to affirm that the White House executive order recognizing only two sexes constitutes censorship and has no place in a free society. University presses strive to give voice to the breadth of human knowledge & experience. 1/2

In a Jisc webinar, hearing that OUP have charged Manchester Uni more than £20,000 each for two OA books. Absolutely outrageous charges, and absolutely unsurprising to hear it was OUP. A Q abt cost breakdown wasn't answered, but you can bet the prestige premium makes up a hefty chunk of that money.

Join Copim colleagues @thoth-metadata.bsky.social and @alittleroad.bsky.social for practical guidance, advice about sharing good #metadata practice for #OAbooks and the opportunity to ask Q's ✋

The OABN is also a working group within the @operaseu.bsky.social OA Books Special Interest Group. Sign up if you're interested to find out more, and how you can be involved! #OAbooks #OpenAccess

Wow - this is extraordinarily concerning, on multiple grounds ...

We join @historians.org & @oah.org in repudiating the recent Executive Order that grossly mischaracterizes US K-12 history education as “radical indoctrination.” The freedom to think, research, publish, read & teach as pillars of an open and just society. Read more: https://bit.ly/3Cshbqt

I am not hearing anything that indicates that institutional support for open research will be assessed for REF 2029. I do not understand how openness is meaningfully appraised by REF's OA policy; research is a process, and framing open as part of an output's delivery misses the point(s) entirely.
