Here is a trichromatic photo that I made with a monochromatic Leica camera. Exposing the camera’s sensor to red, green and blue light rays separately and sequentially allowed me to explore both making long exposure images and the origins of color photography, two subjects are deeply interested in.

As the snow and ice receded on Lake Michigan I found myself staring at these wonderful sculptures that nature created. This is another trichromatic exposure, with an unintended light leak that I think made it all the better. #trichromatic #photography #longexpsoure

While I was mostly focused on making long-exposure photos at @tusentakkfoundation I also had time and access to equipment that allowed to experiment with other techniques, including a monochrome Leica camera. Here is a long trichromatic exposure of Lake Michigan from one of those photo shoots.

Continuing to look at the images I’ve created in residency & think about ways of printing and displaying the work from my series Lake Horizon. Here is a grid of forty-two photographs that is organized in chronological order from a very icy lake at the top left corner down to no ice at all.

While I was observing the waves and listening to the wind I noticed something on the beach, I thought it was either a piece of wood or a dead bird. I was hoping it would be some beach debris but unfortunately it was a bird, perhaps the corpse of a loon. Dead yet so majestic in its final rest.

This photo is a result of month-long residency, a 16" x 21" print showing twenty-one photos from my Lake Horizon project, each 1" wide vertical strip accounts for a single exposure, merged together to show a total time spent from three weeks ago to now, displayed together from left to right. #photo

On a more positive note, I did see some birds flying around the lake. I just wish I saw more live ones, flying happily. I waved to each one I saw and wished them well. #birds #photography

Another visual homage to birds. Seen on the shore of Lake Michigan. Most likely dead from exposure to Avian Flu. #Leland #michigan #birds #avianflu #flyaway #climatechange #environment #seagull #lookingaround #deadbird #sad #photography

Encountered several dead birds including seagulls, loons and possibly ducks on the shores of Lake Michigan. It seems to be due to Avian Flu. So far I mostly shared beautiful/sublime landscape photos but my work often involves looking critically at the landscape and this is an unavoidable part.

Sometimes, it is what it is even if it's seems too much. 15 minutes of Lake Michigan from my series Lake Horizon, as part of my @tusentakkfoundation artist residency. @flakphoto.news #photography #longexposure

Yesterday was quite windy here and just before the sun said goodbye for the day a streak of light appeared through heavy clouds. The gray color at the bottom third of the image is due to sand turbulence near the shore. Four minutes of Lake Michigan from my series Lake Horizon. #photography

What a difference two weeks make! I made the first photo, a sixty-minute (yes, 60) long exposure, two days ago, on March 13th. The second photo, a fifteen-minute long exposure, was made on February 27th. In the span of exactly two weeks the landscape I’ve been documenting has transformed rapidly.

Here are some "interrupted" trees near a fairly busy road in Traverse City, MI on an early morning. I spent a couple of hours with them. I love photographing places in the winter, the light is soft and beautiful, less people are around and it's easier to slow down. #photography #trees

40 seconds of a beach pavilion, Northport, MI. The ice is definitely melting... #landscape #endoftheisland #northport #michigan #photography

Thank you for the support of artists and photographers, Andy! @flakphoto.news #photography

Spring is coming! I made this photo of a grand tree at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse yesterday – matching the one I made there less than two weeks ago at the same spot. See the second photo to see how much the weather has changed since then. The third photo shows the two of them combined. #photo

On a windless day I was able to make this long(er) exposure. Thirty minutes of Lake Michigan, made in residency at Tusen Takk Foundation from my new series Lake Horizon. #lakehorizon #lakemichigan #longexposure #leland #landscapephotography @flakphoto.news #30minutes

15 minutes of Lake Michigan from my new series Lake Horizon, created while in residency at Tusen Takk Foundation. Many thanks to Andy Adams @flakphoto.news for sharing my work with his audience, read more at the link: www.flakphoto.news/p/slow-looki... #photography #longexposure

This past week I set aside time to create new photogravure plates and then ink and carefully press five copies of this image. Flip to the second photo to see my original image titled "Contemplating Thomas Cole's Views, Catskill, 2022." #photogravure #photography #printmaking #catskill

A surprising amount of colors and shades in this corner of Leland, MI. Also, I can't resist photographing pipes when I see them not in the ground... Exploring the area while in residency @tusentakkfoundation #leland #photography #topology #photooftheday #landscapephotography

My latest substack post is live. Please have a look and a read. As a photographer I find it really hard to write meaningful posts but the exercise of doing it is very important. notlikehere.substack.com/p/greetings-...

Fifteen minutes of Lake Michigan from a new series I call Lake Horizon. It was a calm and quite balmy 37 degrees day with barely any wind so a very good time for a long exposure. I didn't even need to hold my tripod down! #photography #longexposure

Some grand trees at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Yes, it was snowing, the ground was icy and the wind chill was out of this world but I loved being at the edge of the peninsula. #landscape #grandtraverselighthouse #trees #longexposure #moundsofsnow #landscape

An odd little building next to a local airstrip / two handsome trees on the other side of the road. #landscapephotography

Two (very) early morning photos from a trip down to Traverse City yesterday. Passed this house and couldn't resist making a photo. Also, I love discovering how the world looks through mounds of snow (Kwik, see second photo). #photography #longexposure

Stepping out in the late afternoon to make a photo of the lake I was greeted with fierce winds. I knew the conditions could result in some spectacular patterns. The first is a 4 minute exposure that took place just when the sun peeked between the clouds, the second is 15 minute long. #longexposure

When I have time to wait for the light to change, to stop and really concentrate, I make images like this. A fifteen minute long exposure of Lake Michigan right next to my Tusen Takk Foundation artist residency. Continuing to explore my surroundings.

Good night from Woodstock, NY.

America

Good morning from a very icy Catskill 🥶❤️

What ARE YOU doing at 6PM tonight? Join me for a lively discussion of the Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence presentation: Judit Germain-Heins, Alon Koppel, and Clara Riedlinger will be presenting their work over the last year. www.simpletix.com/e/2025-sloan...

After being sick with a cold for a week I finally had enough energy to go out and photograph my favorite tree. 📸🌴❤️

OI've been wanting to photograph this house (and tree) for a while and this week I was able to. The light changed rapidly so I made another exposure with a much flatter light, see second shot. Then I decided to combine the two for an almost solarized version, see third shot. What's your favorite?

Framed photograph from my project “Shipping Lane” is ready to be transported to a collector’s home. Ask me about available prints and support art in the Hudson Valley. #photography

Donald Trump is the most unpopular president at the start of his term in modern American political history. Don't let anyone talk to you about a mandate. Don't let anyone talk to you about there being support for his agenda. Don't let anyone tell you that anything about this presidency is normal.

SPREAD PEACE Spread it generously Like old-fashioned butter, cream cheese Or nutella Spread it like it’s the last meal you’ll ever to get to eat Spread it wide, mention it to everyone Dream it, think it Spread peace like it’s abundant Spread peace like it’s like precious, because it is

Good night from Kingston, NY.

Good night from Catskill 🌚

Good night from Schoharie, NY. The name Schoharie is a native word for driftwood.

Stepped out for a snowy walk to not think about the election/inauguration and just relax. When I came back to my studio I saw that I made exactly 47 exposures! No escape from Trump today, I guess. Anyway here are some trees. Trees will keep on growing, nature will be here no matter what.

Yes

A snowy day, finally.
