I can't help but be reminded of the "original" of the genre... Unfortunately, the more things change? The more they stay the same.

There's an interesting England-Scotland* split in this data. Scots are more likely to support using force to defend most NATO allies than English, but less likely in the case of the US. Net support for using force to help defend the US: England: +9 Scotland: -3 *as ever, note the small subsample.

Merz v.firm on European independence from US. Dovish Scholz not going to be part of coalition talks, opening space for more hawkish Pistorius. Stable grand coalition possible. Europe is much stronger today. And yet most reporters are unable to see beyond their pre-written 'AfD triumphant' headline.

Brilliant but devastating editorial in the Financial Times. “In the past 10 days, he [Trump] has all but incinerated 80 years of postwar American leadership. If you are not at the table, you are on the menu. America has turned.”

Merz was an "engager" with the US until he dealt with several key MAGA GOP figures at the Munich Security Conference. Germany also has as much to lose from the end of the alliance with the US as the UK. German and British Gaullists are Atlanticists who were mugged by reality.

The president of the European Council has convened an extraordinary summit on Ukraine on March 6. Von der Leyen announces new €3.5 billion tranche for Ukraine as early as March. Meanwhile, Brussels gives the green light for 16th sanctions package, Kallas: "There is Russian narrative in the US"

🚨🚨 The election of Friedrich Merz might be a turning point for European politics offering hope for Ukrainians amid the Trump nightmare. The new chancellor declared that " he wanted Europe to gain full “independence” from the United States on defense. "🧵 www.politico.eu/article/germ...

Starmer: “Britain will provide Ukraine with $5.6 billion in military aid. We are ready to participate with forces in Ukraine with European allies. Trump created an opportunity.”

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

An era of political fragmentation, online radicalisation and economic nostalgia, all leading to deep uncertainty. In which few politicians have good clear answers, and the ones with bad clear answers are often the most effective.

Merz just said on German TV that the primary priority of his government will be to ensure that Europe can achieve full strategic independence from the United States in the defence against Russia. Merz was once a die hard Atlanicist. Now, after Trump he is a Gaullist. Extraordinary.

We can debate what the best system is for a particular country, but what this usefully underscores is that, when unpopular people get elected to national office, it’s a problem of political architecture, not just the natural consequence of “democracy.”

I love this platform. For a thousand reasons. Chief among them is how it fuels (rather than throttles) journalism. Thank you @jay.bsky.team and BS team.

Starmer claims there will be £200m invested in Grangemouth. So why will it still be closing and why could the UK government find £600m to invest in a refinery in Belgium?

80% of German VOTERS went for parties that promised to have nothing to do with the AFD... MEDIA: Huge win for AFD!

The young vote in Germany, by gender. 😳

This does rapidly minimise the space for any UK bridgebuilding exercises with the US from tomorrow. Will be interesting how this now further evolves.

Brexit law The transcripts of last month's hearings in the EU v UK dispute about the UK prohibiting fishing of sandeel to protect puffins and other marine life are now online - pca-cpa.org/en/cases/334/ BTW I see lawyers for the Scottish govt were involved

You don’t get disabled people into or thriving in work by cutting benefits, further decimating Access to Work or not sorting out accessibility on trains

It is blackmail. Period. But its not only blackmailing Ukraine its also blackmailing EU and its complete automotive industry.

Obviously not the usual line, but don't envy Starmer, Macron etc going into the White House this week, because they know most of what Trump has said is lunacy, on economics and security, but also don't know what he really means, yet know how thin skinned he is. Hence, intelligence gathering...

Terrible news. @hrw.org and @amnesty.org warned about this move by the UK www.hrw.org/news/2025/02...

Can Moldova – population 2.4m – show the world how to stand up to Putin?

He nails it.

“It’s as if we lost the war to US..” He wants to take resources from a country in war. How are we supposed to live? We have children. It’s as if US seeks to deprive us of our economic potential. It would finish us off, the same as America did with Red Indians” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

The evergreen argument annoying people like us digital rights activists have been making for decades to politicians is coming true: Imagine the power you just created being in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. What does it look like now?

Imagine a real-world analogy. A tiny minority of people do unspeakable things in the privacy of their own homes. So the government says "We demand a skeleton key that will unlock any front door in Britain. It's for the greater good!" The protests would stretch from Land's End to John O Groats.

Really important and moving account of state failure in this weekend's @financialtimes.com that is free to read for all here:

An underrated problem with two-party politics is that it sends us a clear signal that the world is binary, that you are either for us or against us, that things are simple rather than subtle and multifaceted.
